Full Version: [TG11] Connecting spx/st 60 network to a st290 ST2 network

Good evening,

I have a good functioning spx/st60 seatalk 1 network and i wanted
to expand with a st290 wind set.

I connected the end of my old network , a st60+ tri with depth en speed, to
the st290 wind, st290 CH wind, and completed it with a connection to
the DPU. Result: seatalk failure, but power on all displays...also the st290 wind.

Then, i connected the DPU to the st290 data display, the windpod, st60cable and windmeter. Result: no winddata on the displays.

Please see my attachement. What went wrong? Thank you in advance.

I have put some connection advice on your other post, but on these problems:

At least, it sounds like you have (at least) two power supplies into the system (via the ST1 network, via the dedicated power to the DPU?) which you should not have. Only ever have one network power supply for ST1/ST2/STNG/NMEA2000.
If you disconnect everything from the DPU except Seatalk yellow and shield/bare (not red), and connect power to the DPU, do you still get Seatalk Fail? If so, I think that the Seatalk comms chip in the DPU has failed. Failed Seatalk devices are known to pull down the whole network and cause these alarms.

What does your ST2 network look like in detail? ST2 is an NMEA2000-like CANbus network and must always have 2x backbone terminators. I don't see any in your drawing: are they fitted? If not, the network won't work. I would suggest reading the ST290 Installation manual, if you want to start working with this old system. Please be aware that ST290 dates from 2002 and was retired over 10 years ago.

Thank you! I realised a didn't connect the backbone terminator in 1 ST2 data display!

My last question. So the st290 is working now , with only the windpod and 4
displays. In this case i only needed 1 backbone terminator plug( i dont have more or a connecter box for multiple pods).
The dpu has its own powersupply. It uses 2 st2 and 1 st1 terminal.

Is it still possible to connect the nmea 0183 out of the spx 5 autopilot to the nmea in ,on the dpu?

In this scenario there is only 1 power supply on the dpu. Maybe not the fastest connection , but does it produce data to the st290 network?

The spx is still working in the old st1 network (speed, depth, compass)

If the DPU's Seatalk1 has indeed failed then that may be your only real option to get them connected. NMEA183's main problem is not that it's slow, but that it can cause problems (data loops) if you connect bi-directionally. If you only need to get heading and rudder from the SPX to the ST290 OR wind from the ST290 to the SPX then 0183 should do that fine - but you should avoid trying to connect in both directions. What can happen there is that the same data gets (re)transmitted by each device and you end up with stale data cycling round in a loop.

Thanks for explaining the possibility.

The ST1 dpu entry is working, because the wind is also displayed on
the st1 wind displays.

But anyway, it works now. I will only use the spx, in 1 way to the dpu. Thats fine.
But, based on your post, the c90w has also a nmea0183 out.....so can i do the same
with the c90w. Connecting the datacable with nmea0183, to the dpu.

So i also will get
COG
SOG

Maybe i can choose between connecting the c99w OR/END spx5. What is best?

Hello Wouter,

You cannot connect two transmitting devices ('talkers') to one receiving NMEA0183 'listener', as they will corrupt each other's data. This is one of the many problems with NMEA0183, and the best solution is always to avoid 0183 completely if at all possible.

If you do need to connect two talker devices on 0183 then you'd need an NMEA Multiplexer. Raymarine doesn't make one, but companies like Actisense or Shipmodul specialise in this kind of thing.

I've been following this thread with interest,I hope you dont mind me jumping in with a query?

Is the ST1 connection on the ST290 DPU bi-directional, if so what is the extent of the information it can feed to the ST290 DPU, and would it feed in Wind & STW information that the ST290 needs for its calculations?

In this case:

ITC5 (Wind) & A22111 (Smart Triducer) => STng Network => E22158 (Stng to ST1 Converter) => (power isolated) => ST1 Network (ST2 Wind & CHW Instruments) =>(power isolated) => ST290 DPU => Graphic & Maxi Displays

Hello JP,

We're always happy for people to jump in on a forum post as long as it's on-topic and doesn't 'hijack' the thread in a different direction, away from the question the original poster asked.

In theory that should work, but multiple network connections (multiple convertors, more than 2 navigational data network types, excluding SeatalkHS/Raynet/Ethernet) should always be avoided if at all possible. One of the problems that can occur is devices relaying data in both directions and particularly Seatalk1 devices 'backing off': stopping transmitting data that they see as already being present on the network. This kind of multi-link network is prone to intermittent data, or static data cycling round in a loop. Unfortunately there's no really good way to connect that group of devices: ST290's Seatalk2 network, which is NMEA2000-ish but not compliant with current versions of the standard, adds a layer of complexity which we don't have in other systems. It was a good thing at the time but isn't as forwards-compatible as the far more established Seatalk1 network unfortunately.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, and that totally makes sense.

I am half way through an upgrade as attached (boat in Greece with me stuck in the UK with a front room full of Raymarine equipment), but should the ST290 Data & Graphics displays not behave as they should, I was beginning to think about a Plan B to reinstate the DPU in some fashion in order to retain the larger displays.
