On a recent 3 week trip I lost my autopilot - my Pilot controller kept reading between 178 and 187 degrees no matter what course I was on. If I set my course on the autopilot and locked in the drive unit, the pilot controller kept re-routing my sailboat to 187 degrees with a 5 degree variance on both size.

I checked for all kinds of possible interference, solar panels, metal, radio... nothing that made a difference.

Can anyone explain what is happening.

Based upon the symptom reported, it would appear that there may be a problem with the autopilot's fluxgate compass transducer. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing how to test the fluxgate compass transducer.
