Assuming the eS127 MFD had an open view of the sky, would the internal GPS function well without the need for an external G150 antenna?

Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Lazybones,

Should an eS-Series MFD be installed in a location affording it an unobstructed view of the skies overhead, then it should not be necessary to interface the MFD to a GA150 antenna or to a Raystar 130 GPS Sensor.
