I have an a78 MFD running v11.26 that will communicate with my cp300 and an a98 MFD running v17.46 that will not communicate with it. I would like to upgrade the a78 but will then loose my cp300. The cp300 is running v3.28 and I believe that I need to run v4.04 but cannot find the software to download.

No end user installable updates are available for the CP300. Should the CP300 be interfaced via Ethernet to the a98 MFD running v17.46, the a98 MFD's Ethernet ports be operational, and the a98 MFD be having issues in communicating with the CP300, then the CP300 should be sent to
Raymarine’s Product Repair Center to be bench checked / serviced.

Are the ethernet ports operational by default or is there a setting to turn them on?

The Ethernet ports of MFDs are always live (i.e. there is no user interface provided to switch them ON/OFF). These ports rarely fail and may easily be tested by interfacing the MFD's Ethernet socket(s) to a compatible Raymarine product having an Ethernet communications interface.
