Full Version: CP470 wired directly to power

Dealer wired CP470 to battery with a Raymarine TM275THW transducer connected. Boat out of the water half the day when tide is out. CP470 no loner seeing transducer. MFD turned off after each use so no power is supplied by Axiom MFDs. Did the transducer burn out since it was out of water part of the time. Dealer said they always wire the CP470 directly and not through a switch
Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Larry,

While the CP470's Installation Instructions indicate that the CP470's power circuit may be connected to an in-line fuse which in turn may be connected to to the battery's terminals, the Installation Instructions also recommend that the CP470 be powered via a distribution panel featuring breakers or a switched circuit protected by fuse. Should the equipment be switched ON and the transducer be pinging, then pinging will cease within a few minutes after the MFD has been switched OFF. Pinging should not resume until the MFD is switched ON again.

The danger in having a transducer ping for extended periods when out of the water is that the transducer element(s) may overheat and fail ... this is particularly true for high power CHIRP transducers. In this case, it is recommended that the transducer be tested to determine whether the fault is resident within the transducer or within the CP470.
Chuck, thank you the quick response. If I reading it correctly the MFD controls power to the transducer? The cp470 still shows power to it by flashing Aber. How does the MFD control power to transducer if CP470 is powered directly from battery and not powered through the MFD. appreciate the help and will be looking for a good repair facility.
Larry,

Q1. If I reading it correctly the MFD controls power to the transducer?
A1. More specifically, MFD controls whether the CP470/570 will ping. As verified this morning, the CP470 ceased pinging of the interfaced transducer within approximately 30 seconds of the communications being lost with the MFD (in this case the MFD was switched OFF).

A2. when The cp470 still shows power to it by flashing Aber. How does the MFD control power to transducer if CP470 is powered directly from battery and not powered through the MFD.
A2. See the response to Q1. Essentially, the software within the CP470/570 is designed to prohibit pinging of the interfaced transducers whenever the CP470/570 is not communicating with the MFD. As such, it is completely satisfactory to power the CP470/570 via a direct connection to the battery.
Chuck, Now I understand. Thank you for the response.
You're welcome.
