Operating Raymarine products off of the boat

It is not uncommon for Raymarine product owners to operate their equipment off of the boat to:
- understand how the equipment is interfaced,
- familiarize oneself with the operation of the equipment,
- to perform basic configuration settings (units, preferences, etc.),
- plan / transfer waypoints and routes,
- troubleshoot problems, and
- demonstrate equipment features and operation.

When Raymarine or its dealers set up a product demonstration station, they will typically use a regulated 12V power supply (ex. Pyramid PS-9KX (5A), PS14KX (12A), PSV300 (30A), etc.) to power marine electronics. The capacity of the power supply chosen will be dependent upon the total power consumption requirement of the of the equipment which will be powered. Power consumption information for each product may be found within the product's installation guide. Amperage is determined by dividing power consumption (Watts) by the voltage. Accordingly, is seeking a 12V power supply, the rated amperage of the supply (Amps) should be greater than the total power requirement of the electronics (Watts) divided by twelve (A=V/12). The portability and relatively low cost of such power supplies make the the preferred choice for those who will be operating marine electronics off of the boat. Other customers will simply connect the power cables from their equipment to bus bars which which in turn are connected to a fully charged battery having a charger connected to it.

For those who have already installed their products onboard their vessels, operating the equipment off of the boat would require that one at least purchase an additional power cable for the device to be powered. Part numbers for product power cables may be found within the installation guides of most Raymarine products (often within the document's Spares appendix). Products (ex. EV-1 CCU, p70S/p70RS Autopilot Control Head, i50/i60/i70 instruments, etc.) which are designed to interfaced via a powered and properly terminated SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone would require that a such a backbone be constructed off of the vessel to support operating them off of the vessel. A SeaTalkng Power Cable is typically used to supply power to a spur socket within such a backbone.

When connecting the electronics to a power supply,
- the drain lead along with the black lead of the product's power cable to the power supply's negative terminal;
- the red lead of the product's power cable to the power supply's positive terminal.
