My ST4000 continuously says no data or low batt and goes off course. Is there a logical reason why or is the unit just shot? My mechanic checked it and said that there was no wire corrosion causing the problem.

The symptoms you describe suggest the ST4000 PCB is faulty and will need to be replaced.
This product is no longer supported by Raymarine, since spares are very difficult to come by.
We recommend it is replaced with an Evolution 100 system which can be connected to the same drive as the ST4000 operated.
