Fluxgate compass wire trimming... is that OK? - basssears - 03-17-17 10:36 PM

Bringing a new to me ST4000 back to life.

Existing installation has only 4 wires coming out of the black sheath of wires running from the fluxgate compass to the control unit... the "Screen" (gray?) wire is not there. The other four (blue/yellow/green/red) are there.

So planning on trimming back the sheath and seeing if I can find that fifth wire, but then I'll have one wire shorter than the others. A bit annoying.

My question is whether it is OK to trim these wires to shorter length, or are they somehow tuned to the length they come from the factory. The screen wire is already missing so already "shorter", I'm hoping to just find it and trim the other wires back to the same spot and put new connectors on.

Is that OK?
