I suspect the answer is no, but can the Axiom 9 be mounted with the long axis in the vertical orientation (and the text in portrait view instead of landscape)?

Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Dave,
As you have suspected the LightHouse 3 software has only been designed to support use of the MFD in landscape orientation. Should you desire, a feature request will be submitted to consider this feature for inclusion within a future LightHouse 3 software update an future MFD designs.
