Things to be considered prior to purchasing second hand marine electronics

Whenever one is considering whether to purchase second hand marine electronics and/or is considering whether to invest time and resources in the installation of second hand marine electronics, it is recommended that one proceed with caution to fully understand whether accessories, parts, service, and support remain available for the second hand marine electronics before proceeding. Those considering such are also advised to fully understand the limitations of the proposed system, compatibility of the marine electronics, and further limitations with respect to future marine electronics additions to the system. Finally, comparisons should be made with currently manufactured products to determine whether the additional features, warranty, availability of support, availability of parts, and availability of service of currently manufactured marine electronics may be a more prudent alternative ... such comparisons should particularly be heeded by blue water sailors, cruisers, professionals, and others for whom reliable operation, support, parts, and service are essential. Armed with this information, one may then ascertain whether the risks of proceeding with second hand marine electronics are prudent. It would also be prudent to test the components off of the vessel before committing to their installation ... better to perform such verification on the bench than later finding out that one or more of the devices is faulty, will not support integration with the system's other devices, or cannot be easily replaced.
