[CA11] C140W slow to respond - tyed - 01-23-19 05:02 PM

Well, we're out cruising and our normally loyal C140W is behaving poorly. Specifically, it doesn't want to zoom out. When we attempt to zoom out, the waypoints on the display move to incorrect positions, but the actual map does not change size. After some experimentation, we found that if we remove the Navionics chip from the unit, it works pretty well. Of course, in so doing, we lose all the chart updates that the Navionics chip provides.

We installed the chip (purchased through Raymarine) about six months ago and the operation of the MFD was seamless at that point. Sadly, in the last couple of weeks of active cruising, it has slowly gotten worse and is now to the point it doesn't want to zoom out hardly at all. Concerned that we might have overloaded the processor with routes and tracks, we went through and deleted a bunch. Not too many left. It didn't really make a difference.

So wondering what to do. Is the chip going bad? I was told that the chip has a built in battery. Perhaps it is not working properly. The chip is labeled CF/NAV+NI. It is a 16GB chip. Any advice sincerely appreciated! We are headed from Ft Myers Beach to Marathon in a few days and sure would be nice to have a fully operational chart plotter!

Welcome to the Raymarine Forum David,

Please note that Raymarine, Inc. does not sell Navionics chart cards. Navionics is owned by Garmin and Navionics chart cards are sold through the Navionics dealer network. As Raymarine MFD support use of Navionics cartography, most Raymarine dealers are also Navionics dealers.

Please note that it is not recommended that a track which has been started be left on indefinitely. It is typically recommended that a track which has been started be stopped every 24 hours or at the end of each day on the water. To address the reported issue, it would be recommended that a track which has been started, be stopped, and deleted or saved. Should the problem persist, then it would be recommended that the MFD's settings be noted, that the MFD's waypoints, routes, and tracks be saved to a CF memory card and that a System Settings and Data Reset be be commanded to restore operation of the MFD.

Should the problem persist thereafter, then it may indicate a problem with the chart card or with the MFD's memory card reader. It would be recommended that you first try to update the Navionics NAV+ chart card with Navionics Freshest Data updates. Should this fail to address the problem, then it would be recommended that the MFD be tested with another Navionics chart card which was known to be operational. Should the problem be then be duplicated with the other chart card, then it would appear that the MFD's memory card reader is failing, necessitating replacement of the MFD, as Raymarine can no longer service C/E-Series Widescreen MFDs.

Thank you very much, Chuck. I will run through these steps and hopefully get this resolved. Good tip on the tracks. Did not know we should use these only for a given day...

Update: We have determined that either our card reader on the MFD or the Navionics card itself is the problem with our unit. How do we determine if the card itself is bad? Is there any type of test for it?

David,

As the C-Series Widescreen MFDs were pre-loaded with Navionics Silver cartography, it would be necessary to test the MFD by a method other then determining whether it can display detailed cartography. One such method would be to remove the chart card from the MFD's memory card reader and then command the MFD to Find Nearest Tide Station. Should no tide stations be listed or should you be unable to exercise the command, then it would be recommended that the Navionics chart card be re-inserted and that the Find command be executed a second time. Should the MFD respond with a list of tide stations, then the MFD's reader would be determined to be operational. Another test which may be performed is to command the MFD to save waypoints to the Navionics chart card. Should the MFD be successful, then it's reader would typically be deemed to be operational.

Per my earlier response, the MFD may also be tested with another Navionics chart card which was known to be operational. Should the problem be duplicated with the other chart card, then, then it would appear that the MFD's memory card reader has failed.

Thanks for the input. Another card is not readily available in the foreseeable future. I will try the other suggestion. I may return the card as it is in warranty.

You're welcome.
