[CA] AXIOM 12 with AIRMAR B164
Hello all,

I am getting an AXIOM 12 (E70369-00-LNC) to replace a 2008 E120. I've already figured more or less the NMEA backbone with STNG Starter Kit T70134. I'm also adding an ECI-100 to integrate my twin Yamahas into the display. And I plan to use the current thru-hull transducer Airmar B164-20.

So this is my parts list so far:
E70227 ECI-100 Engine Interface
E70242 Ray-Yamaha Command Link Cable
T70134 STNG Starter Kit
A80529 E120 to AXIOM 12 Adaptor Plate

I need an adaptor cable for Airmar B164 to 25 Pin transducer input on the AXIOM

So....

Q1 How do I connect Axiom 12 to Airmar B164-20?
Q2 Do I disconnect Airmar B164-20 from the sounder it is attached to and go directly to AXIOM?

Q3 What adapter Cable do I need?
Q4 And finally, Should I add a fuse to the backbone power cable (A06049) or it is not necessary?

Thanks for your time

P.S. I'm also adding a very unprofessional Diagram

RE: AXIOM 12 with AIRMAR B164
Welcome to the Raymarine Forum rarambarri,

Q1 How do I connect Axiom 12 to Airmar B164-20?
A1. B164-20 describes a family of transducers. Had the tranducer in question previously been directly interfaced to the Transducer socket a DSM300? If so, then the transducer will be connected to an A80489 Transducer Adapter, which in turn will be interfaced to the Axiom RV MFD's Transducer socket

Q2 Do I disconnect Airmar B164-20 from the sounder it is attached to and go directly to AXIOM?
A2. Negative ... see the response to Q1.

Q3. What adapter Cable do I need?
A3. See the response to Q1.

Q4 And finally, Should I add a fuse to the backbone power cable (A06049) or it is not necessary?
A4. Yes. The SeaTalkng Power Cable should connected to a switched 12VDC power circuit, which is protected by a 5A fuse / breaker.

RE: [CA] AXIOM 12 with AIRMAR B164
Chuck, thank you very much for your expert help.

I'm still a little confused though. The transducer is currently connected to a DSM300 (I'm including a picture of the connector) which in turn is connected to the E120 via a SeaTalk / ethernet type cable.

Does this mean I keep on using the DSM300 even though the Axiom has its own sonar?

I called Raymarine yesterday and was told that I needed Adaptor Cable A80488 to connect the Airmar 164B-20 directly to the Axiom. But you are recommending to use Adaptor Cable A80489.

So, I'll go ahead and order the A80489 as well and return the other one then.

Thanks again and pardon my ignorance on the subject

RE: [CA] AXIOM 12 with AIRMAR B164
rarambarri,

Please note that LightHouse 3 software for Axiom and Axiom Pro MFDs is not designed to support integration with a DSM30 or DSM300. While Axiom DV, Axiom RV, and Axiom Pro RV MFDs may be adapted to be used with transducers which were designed to be directly mated to these DSMs, 1kW or 2kW transducers can only be driven at 600W by the internal 600W 50kHz/200kHz internal sonar circuitry of the Axiom Pro MFDs. In contrast Axiom Pro RV MFDs feature internal 1kW 50kHz/200kHz internal sonar circuitry and would be able to drive up to 1kW through transducers which were designed to be directly mated to these DSMs. As you have a 1kW transducer and an Axiom RV MFD, should you desire to drive up to 1kW through the 1kW B164-20 transducer, then it would be necessary to replace the DSM with a CP370 1kW 50kHz / 200kHz Sounder Module. Otherwise, the adapter cable which I had specified within my initial response may be used to drive 600W through your 1kW B164-20 transducer if the transducer's cable plug had been directly interfaced to the DSM300. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing this subject.

RE: [CA] AXIOM 12 with AIRMAR B164
Thank you Chuck,
I got confused because on the initial questions i asked. On number two.....

"Q2 Do I disconnect Airmar B164-20 from the sounder it is attached to and go directly to AXIOM?
A2. Negative ... see the response to Q1."

....And based on the answer, I assumed that I had to keep the transducer connected to the DSM300.

Now I understand that the cable coming from the transducer should be disconnected from the DSM300 and connected to the A80489 Adaptor Cable which in turn is connected to the Axiom's 25 pin input.

Thanks for making this clear
