[CA11] How to connect a NMEA output from a VHF to seatalk network?
I purchased a standard horizon gx2200 with AIS, that uses the NMEA 0183 protocol. It has the wires, I want to connect this to my seatalk hs5 network switch.

Would one of these work? If so whic one?

The GX2200 uses NMEA 0183 protocol to share coordinates, DSC and AIS information to and from a GPS chart plotter. The GX2200 transfers AIS infor- mation to a GPS chart plotter or PC at 38400 baud (sometimes called HS). GPS and DSC information is transferred between a GPS chart plotter with multiple ports (minimum 2) at 4800 baud (default setting).

Please click here to view a FAQ addressing this subject. As indicated within the referenced FAQ, it is not possible to do as you have suggested. The referenced FAQ provides alternative recommendations for interfacing devices having a NMEA 0183 communications interface to the system ... in this case it would typically be recommended that an Actisense NGW-1-ISO-AIS NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 data bridging device be used to support 38400 BAUD bidirectional communications with the GX2200 (see page 21 of the GX2200's manual). Doing so will support supplying GPS data to the GX2200 as well as support supplying AIS data to the SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone for use by the marine electronics system. Should the computer based navigational application support NMEA 2000 communications, then you may want to consider using an Actisense NGT-1 to communicate with the marine electronics system. Alternatively, a second NGW-1-ISO-AIS may be interfaced to the system to support 38400 BAUD communications with the computer to support supplying it with AIS and GPS data. A complete list of the NMEA 0183 sentences supported by the NGW-1-ISO-AIS may be found here.

While this response identifies solutions available from Actisense, other third party NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 and NMEA 2000 to Wi-Fi / USB data bridging products may provide similar capabilities.
