The maximum speed at which a transom mounted transducer will maintain bottom contact varies widely. Generally speaking, when operating at speed, bottom contact will be maintained at greater speeds when the vessel is equipped with a thru-hull or in-hull transducer. As the DownVision, SideVision, and RealVision 3Dâ„¢ are primarily designed to support sonar imagery when operating at trolling speeds, transom mounted versions of these transducers need not be installed as low (relative to the hull's bottom) as a transducer which has been designed to skim the water surface (ex. p58, p66, etc.). Accordingly, these transducers need only be installed low enough on the transom to permit its elements to be completely submerged when operating at trolling speeds. By mounting the transducer higher, on the transom, the transducer will also produce less spray and will be subjected to less hydrodynamic forces when operating the boat at high speeds. The latter will prevent unintended kick-up or damage to the transducer bracket.

For higher speed sonar operation, it would typically be recommended that a low profile thru-hull, fared thru-hull, or in-hull transducer be interfaced to the system (may require an additional sounder module (ex. CP370, CP470, CP570, etc.). As an example, Axiom RV and Axiom DV MFDs may be fitted with a Y-Cable to which a compatible 50kHz/200kHz transducer may additionally be mated to the Axiom MFD for such purposes.
