(DG) Connecting NMEA 0183 Version (1.5 to 2.3 ) to seatalking backbone
I have standard horizon intrepid plus vhf radio with NMEA 0183 Version (1.5 to 2.3 ) plug on its accessory cable. I want to connect this radio to my seatalk ng backbone which consists of my st 60 instruments and 6002 autopilot via seatalk to seatalking adapter kit , es75 mfd, quantum WiFi radar and ais 650. What cable (if any) do I need to do so?
Thanks in advance
George

Hi George

Thank you for your enquiry.

To connect NMEA0183 to STng, you willneed an interface, please click here to read more about what type of interface is needed.

Hi Derek,
Thanks for a quick response. From reading info you’ve provided I understood that in order to supply vhf NMEA 0183 radio with gps data from es75 all I need is the DeviceNet female/male adaptor cable, such as A06045 or A06046 connected to a seatalking backbone as a spur. Am I correct?

Regards,
George

HI Art20c

No, not quite, the easiest route to supply NMEA0183 position information to the vhf is to use the STng to NMEA0183 converter, part numberE70196.

This is a converter block which connects to the STng Backbone and has an NMEA0183 output specifically for VHF connection.

HI Derek,
According to the pictures of this kit it doesn’t have a cable with NMEA 0183 plug with should go on vhf radio nmea 0103 connector. Can you clarify this? Also you mentioned that using this kit is the easiest way, are there any other ways to do that?
Regards, George

HI Art20c

Thank you for your response

The Kit is supplied with a cable that plugs into the yellow socket on the converter, the other end of the wire is bare cables - because most VHF radios will also have an NMEA cable with bare ends - you then simply connect the appropriate colours to each other using a connector block.

It really is the easiest least cost way of doing this.

The alternative is to run cables to the AIS 650, identify the NMEA 0183 4800 baud output and connect this tothe NMEA for the radio.

Derek, could you elaborate on this alternative connection to ais 650 more? Are there any schematics available? Reason I’m asking for this is that my vhf and ais are sitting next to each other

RE: (DG) Connecting NMEA 0183 Version (1.5 to 2.3 ) to seatalking backbone
HI Art20c

Raymarine's recommendation is NOT to use the NMNEA GPS output from the AIS650, since this requires set up changes within the AIS650 and we recommend NOT to do this. ( I should not have mentioned it - apologies)

So we would really advocate using the SeaTalk to NMEA0183 converter block - since this was designed to do the job.
