Sending routes to C80

Sending routes to C80
I have a Raymarine C80 on my boat, connected to an Actisense NDC-4, which is also connected to a Simrad VHF/AIX receiver, Raymarine sounder, and VesselView.

I have a Windows laptop connected to the NDC-4, running Coastal Explorer. CE receives all of the data from all the connected devices. And the C80 is receiving data from other devices via the NDC-4, such as AIS.

However, when I try to send a route from CE to the C80, it doesn't work. On the C80, I select "Receive via NMEA 0183", and in CE I click "send to GPS", using the NDC, with either NMEA 0183 or the Raymarine protocol selected.

Nothing seems to happen. I've also tried to send a single waypoint, without success.

Any suggestions?

RE: Sending routes to C80
Welcome to the Raymarine Forum weisbergj,

It is recommended that you verify that the NMEA 0183 input leads (white and green) of the MFD's NMEA 0183 Cable have been interfaced correctly your multiplexer and that the multplexer's NMEA 0183 output port and MFD's NMEA 0183 port have both been configured for 4800 BAUD NMEA 0183 communications. If so, then the MFD's NMEA 0183 IN (Rx) port should be monitored to verify whether data is flowing into its NMEA 0183 buffer as follows:
- MENU->SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS->EXTERNAL INTERFACES->NMEA0183
- Press the BUFFER function key
- Configure the DIRECTION function key to Rx
- Command the PC planning application to transmit its waypoints
- Examine the MFD's IN buffer for received and properly formatted NMEA 0183 v3.01 sentences.

RE: Sending routes to C80
Thanks Chuck. I believe the wiring is correct, as the C80 is receiving AIS data over the same NMEA input leads.

I have the C80 port set to 38400 baud, as required for AIS. However, I did try slowing it down to 4800 with no results.

I will try your suggestions below when I'm next on the boat.

RE: Sending routes to C80
weisbergj,

Per the prior response, it is recommended that you verify that properly formatted NMEA 0183 WPL and RTE sentences are being received within the MFD's NMEA 0183 receive (RX) buffer. Should these sentences not be received, then the MFD's NMEA 0183 circuitry may be tested by performing a wraparound test of the MFD's NMEA 0183 port.

NMEA 0183 Wrap-around Test Procedure:
1) Confirm that the MFD is receiving a GPS position FIX or instrument data
2) Configure the MFD's NMEA 0183 port to NMEA 4800.
3) The MFD's NMEA 0183 Port may be tested as follows:
a) Splice/connect the MFD NMEA 0183 Cable's NMEA 0183 IN+ lead (white) to the MFD NMEA 0183 Cable's NMEA 0183 Cable's NMEA OUT+ lead (yellow).
b) Splice/connect the MFD NMEA 0183 Cable's NMEA 0183 Cable's NMEA IN- lead (green) to the MFD NMEA 0183 Cable's NMEA 0183 Cable's NMEA OUT- lead (brown).
4) The MFD's NMEA 0183 Port buffer will then be monitored to verify that it is receiving data. The MFD's NMEA 0183 Rx buffers may be viewed as follows:
a) MENU->SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS->EXTERNAL INTERFACES->NMEA0183
b) DIRECTION->RX
c) Configure the DIRECTION function key to Rx
d) START BUFFER
e) Should NMEA 0183 sentences be observed within the buffer featuring the Rx direction indicator, then the MFD's NMEA 0183 Port would be deemed to be operational. Should no NMEA 0183 sentences be observed within the buffer featuring the Rx direction indicator, then the MFD's NMEA 0183 port would be deemed to be not operational and should be serviced by Raymarine’s Product Repair Center.

RE: Sending routes to C80
Hi Chuck,

I conducted this test today, and the C80 is receiving NMEA sentences in diagnostic mode.

Any other suggestions?

RE: Sending routes to C80
weisbergj,

Thanks for confirming that the MFD's NMEA 0183 I/O port is operational C-Series Classic MFDs operating with v5.16 C-Series Classic MFD software (i.e. the final C-Series Classic MFD software update) will support importing waypoints and routes at either 4800 or 38400 BAUD. Should the MFD not be operating with this version of software, then it is recommended that the MFD's software be updated accordingly.

While it is acknowledged that the port is operational, it has not been specifically indicated whether the MFD's buffer has been monitored during transmission from the third party PC navigation software product to verify that the MFD is receiving properly formatted NMEA 0183 WPL and RTE sentences. You may also want to consider examining the third party navigational software product's configuration settings to verify whether there is any manufacturer specific setting and if so, configure it to support communications with Raymarine equipment. Below is an example of NMEA 0183 WPL and RTE sentence transmission from a NMEA 0183 source.
