Testing RayNet and SeaTalkHS Cables

Raymarine products requiring high bandwidth communications are designed to do so via marinized Ethernet networking components. Raymarine RayNet, SeaTalkhs, and Digital Radar Cables featuring RJ45 termination are manufactured with T568B termination. Raymarine's RayNet, SeaTalkHS, and Digital Radar Cables are designed to support Ethernet communications between compatible Raymarine products featuring RayNet, SeaTalkhs, RJ45, or Digital Radar communications sockets.

One of the most common causes of failure is an Ethernet network cable failure which has resulted from kinking or exposing the Ethernet cable to a bend radius which is less than 6" in diameter. Such installation issues can result in permanent damage to the cable. Accordingly, it is recommended that the system's Ethernet communications cable be inspected for kinks and tight radius bends. Any suspect cables should be replaced.

When troubleshooting Ethernet communications within a Raymarine system, it may be necessary to perform end to end cable testing. To do so, commonly a available Ethernet tester (ex. Extech CT100, Hobbes Netfinder Pro, etc.) will be used. To view a brief video demonstrating the use of an Ethernet Tester, click here. As these testers are commonly designed to accept a RJ45 (M) plug, it may be necessary to adapt the end(s) of each cable being tested as follows:

- cable terminating in RayNet (F) plug: adapt with a cable assembly constructed from an A80162 RayNet (M) to RayNet (M) Cable Joiner and an A62360 1m RayNet (F) to RJ45 (M) Cable;
- cable terminating in SeaTalkHS (M) plug: adapt with a cable assembly constructed from an A80160 SeaTalkHS (F) to RayNet (F) Adapter, A80162 RayNet (M) to RayNet (M) Cable Joiner, and an A62360 1m RayNet (F) to RJ45 (M) Cable;
- cable terminating in SeaTalkHS (F) plug: adapt with an E55049 1.5m SeaTalkHS (M) to RJ45 (M) Cable;
- cable terminating in RJ45 (F) socket: adapt with an E06054 1.5m RJ45 (M) to RJ45 (M) Cable;
- cable terminating in RJ45 (M) plug: no adaptation required;
- Digital Radar Cables should be tested by connecting the Ethernet tester's transmitter to the RJ45 (M) plug inside of the radome or open array pedestal after switching OFF power to these devices. Should the other end of the Digital Radar Cable be terminated with a RJ45 (M) plug, then it may be simply plugged into the Ethernet tester's receiver. Should the other end of the Digital Radar Cable be terminated with a RayNet(F) plug, then an assembly constructed from an A80162 RayNet (M) to RayNet (M) Cable Joiner and an A62360 1m RayNet (F) to RJ45 (M) Cable would be used adapt the Digital Radar Cable to be mated to the Ethernet tester's receiver.
