[DG11] e7 - PGN
Hi Forum,

Allow me to say hi - this is my first post! :-) My name is Josh, I sail a 26ft cruiser in the Netherlands.

On board, I have installed an e7 MFD which, due to its installed location beneath the sprayhood, seemingly has difficulties in catching a reliable GPS signal. I also have installed on board two other possible sources of GPS signals, being a DSC VHF and an AIS transponder.

I now read elsewhere that the Raymarine MFDs are rather tricky in accepting the GPS position from other sources, and that in particular PGN 129029 will be needed for the e7 to accept the signal.

Could someone confirm that this is correct, as none of the other sources seem to be able to make this PGN available? Would anyone be some to propose smart ideas how to make this work?

Cheers,
Josh

RE: [DG11] e7 - PGN
HI Josh,

Thank you for your enquiry.

PGN 129029 is the GNSS PGN that is used to receive external sources of GPS data, also 129025 can be used.

What PGN do you have available from your external sources?

You need to make sure that you only have one source of GPS on the network at any one time, multiple sources will cause conflicts of data.

Thanks
Derek

RE: [DG11] e7 - PGN
Hi Derek,

Thanks for your response.

Em-Trak’s B100 AIS Transceiver is outputting PGN 129025 and 129026 onto the network, yet I cannot select the unit as a GPS source in the e7’s relevant menu.

Would you have an idea how to solve this? Can you confirm that those two PGNs should be sufficient for the e7 to use the Transceiver as GPS source?

Thanks a lot,
Josh

RE: [DG11] e7 - PGN
Hi Josh,

These PGNS are the only ones required, however, the format of the PGN may be incorrect or invalid, I can only suggest contacting Em-Trak.

Regards
Derek

RE: [DG11] e7 - PGN
Hi Derek,

For the avoidance of doubt - what you're saying is that PGN 129025 and 129026 are sufficient for the e7 to accept a GPS source, is this correct?

To aid my discussions with Em-Trak, would you share which PGNs (and in which format) e.g. the RS150 would put onto the SeaTalkNG bus?

All the best,
Josh

RE: [DG11] e7 - PGN
Hi Josh,

The minimum (required) message set depends on what functionality is required, so they are not normally specified.
The PGN alone defines the message and the details can’t be published (NMEA license).

129025 and 129026 are not sufficient on their own.
129029 is also required, because it tell us that the fix is valid or not and we won’t accept position data unless we know that the source has a ‘fix’.

129026 is required for COG SOG, 129026 should also be ignored if the fix is not valid (from 129029).

If al these PGNs are being transmitted and are of the correct format, ( for details ask NMEA) you may try to do an MDS configuration within the e7 to select (tell the Raymarine system to use) a third party GPS, even though the 3rd party GPS itself doesn’t support MDS.

Regards
Derek

RE: [DG11] e7 - PGN
Hi Derek,

Thanks for the clarification, so the NMEA2K route won't work. However, unless mistaken, I could also connect the Transceiver via NMEA0183, avoiding the PGN issue.

Is this correct?

Cheers,
Josh

RE: [DG11] e7 - PGN
Hi Josh,

NMEA0183 should work, remember Baud rate should be 4800.

Thanks
Derek
