[CA11] Electronic Upgrades for our Manta 40 Catamaran
Hi,
We are looking at upgrading our electronics on our 40 foot Manta Sailing Catamaran.
I've attached a diagram of two proposed versions (VER A and VER B) as well as a diagram of the existing system.

I would appreciate comments on both systems, any advice, anything we may be missing or should consider, and specifically thoughts on the port hull depth sensor option P79s (and other options to consider and pros/cons).

Thank you,

Jason

RE: [CA11] Electronic Upgrades for our Manta 40 Catamaran
Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Jason,

Thanks for considering Raymarine products.

Within Rev A drawing:

- the diagram incorrectly indicates that the MFD is interfaced a backbone (blue) socket within the 5-Way Connector. Only Backbone Cables and SeaTalkng Termination plugs may be connected to a backbone socket. Devices featuring a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 socket (ex. MFD, EV-1, P70S, ACU-200, i70S, P79S, Vesper AIS, SeaTalkng Power Cable, etc.) may only be interfaced to spur (white) sockets within the backbone. Accordingly, the backbone must contain enough spur sockets to accommodate each device having a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 communication interface. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing how additionally spur sockets may be added to a backbone.

- the diagram incorrectly indicates that the Evolution autopilot components have been interfaced to a SeaTalk bus. Please see the first item listed above addressing that these components should each be interfaced to a spur socket within the backbone.

- the diagram incorrectly indicates that the P79S is to be daisy chained to the i70S. Please see the first item listed above addressing that these components should each be interfaced to a spur socket within the backbone.

- The Smart Controller base station and ST60 instruments should each be daisy chained together and connected to the SeaTalk (yellow) socket of the SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converter.

- The diagram is missing a SeaTalkng Power Cable. The SeaTalkng Power Cable should be connected to a switched 12VDC power circuit. The other end of the SeaTalkng Power Cable should be plugged into a spur (white) socket within the backbone. The SeaTalkng power dip switch of the S2G should be shifted to the OFF position.

- the diagram shows no SeaTalkng Termination Plugs ... one SeaTalkng Termination Plug must be installed within backbone socket located at each of the backbone's two ends.

Within Rev B drawing:

- the diagram incorrectly indicates that the MFD is interfaced a backbone (blue) socket within the 5-Way Connector. Only Backbone Cables and SeaTalkng Termination plugs may be connected to a backbone socket. Devices featuring a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 socket (ex. MFD, i70S, P79S, Vesper AIS, SeaTalkng Power Cable, etc.) may only be interfaced to spur (white) sockets within the backbone. Accordingly, the backbone must contain enough spur sockets to accommodate each device having a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 communication interface. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing how additionally spur sockets may be added to a backbone.

- Please click here to view a FAQ addressing how the SeaTalk bus featuring a legacy autopilot should be interfaced to the system.

- the diagram incorrectly indicates that the P79S is to be daisy chained to the i70S. Please see the first item listed above addressing that these components should each be interfaced to a spur socket within the backbone.

- The Smart Controller base station, ST60 instruments, and S1 autopilot course computer should each be daisy chained together and connected to the SeaTalk (yellow) socket of the SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converter. Per the FAQ referenced above, the ST6002 Autopilot Control Head should disconnected from the daisy chained SeaTalk devices and should instead be interfaced to the other SeaTalk Socket of the S1 Autopilot Course Computer (i.e. the one that the daisy chained SeaTalk devices has not been connected to).

RE: [CA11] Electronic Upgrades for our Manta 40 Catamaran
Hi Chuck,

Thank you for your comments. I've redrawn the proposed upgrades and would appreciate you taking another look to be sure I've got it right. Also, does the Raystar 125 GPS antenna connect to the Axiom Pro or do I need a new antenna?

Attached is the diagram.

Thanks,

Jason

RE: [CA11] Electronic Upgrades for our Manta 40 Catamaran
Jason,

Your most recent diagram shows significant improvement over the initial diagram. However, the diagram incorrectly indicates that the Evolution autopilot components have been interfaced to a SeaTalk bus (i.e. ST60 Tridata) and to one another. These connections must be removed from the diagram ... more specifically,
- no connection should be shown between the p70S and the ST60 Tridata, and
- no connection should be shown between the p70S and the EV-1, and
- no connection should be shown between the p70S and the ACU200.
As indicated within my initial response, devices featuring a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 socket (i.e. EV-1, P70S, ACU-200) may only be interfaced to spur (white) sockets within the backbone. Accordingly, the backbone must contain enough spur sockets to accommodate each device having a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 communication interface. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing how additionally spur sockets may be added to a backbone.

- The diagram incorrectly shows that the linear drive is connected to the autopilot control head ... the linear drive should instead be connected to the ACU200.

- The diagram is missing a rudder reference transducer. The rudder reference transducer within the ACU200's package must be installed and interfaced to the ACU200's Rudder terminals.

RE: [CA11] Electronic Upgrades for our Manta 40 Catamaran
Hi Chuck,

Attached is Version 3 of my drawing. I think I have incorporated all your corrections. I also added a 12v power in to the Axiom 9 Pro as I believe I read it's best to power directly. Two remaining questions that I had is (1) can I use my older GPS antenna with the Axiom Pro or does that require a new antenna? I know the Axiom has a built in antenna but our boat has a full aluminum bimini top that covers the aft third of the boat including the helm station, and (2) is the Airmar P79S Smartâ„¢ In-Hull Transducer a good choice for our sailboat or are there other depth transducers you would recommend?

Would appreciate you taking another look just to ensure I've incorporated everything correctly.

Thanks again for all your assistance.

Best,

Jason

RE: [CA11] Electronic Upgrades for our Manta 40 Catamaran
Jason,

Your system diagram now appears to be correct regard to how the equipment should be interfaced and how the backbone should be powered. As you have suggested the MFD must be powered via the Power cable which is supplied with it. Similarly, the Quantum 2 Radome must be powered via the supplied Quantum Power Cable or via a Digital Radar Cable (the latter would be recommended for those seeking a wired communications path to the Quantum 2 radome. Finally, the ACU will need to be powered. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing installing power circuits for marine electronics.

Q1. can I use my older GPS antenna with the Axiom Pro or does that require a new antenna?
A1. Yes. The Raystar 125 GPS Sensor may be interfaced to the system in either of the following ways without incurring additional hardware:
- interface it to the SeaTalk bus to which the ST60 instruments and Smart Controller base station have been interfaced, or
- interface it to the NMEA 0183 Port 1 leads of the MFD's Power/NMEA 0183/Video Input Cable. This method will require that the Raystar 125 GPS Sensor be powered from a switched 12VDC power circuit.

Q2. Is the Airmar P79S Smartâ„¢ In-Hull Transducer a good choice for our sailboat or are there other depth transducers you would recommend?
A2. Maximum depth performance will generally be achieved with depth transducer which is in direct contact with the water. However should the instrument's primary function be to monitor depth in shallow waters to keep the boat from grounding, then an in-hull transducer such as the P79S should be satisfactory.
