Painting of Raymarine Radomes and Open Arrays
Raymarine often receives inquiries regarding the impact of paint on a radar housing. While we understand that it is often desired to modify the appearance of the radar to aesthetically match a vessel, Raymarine does not recommended or supported this action for following reasons.
1. Radar FCC approvals are granted based on a strict set of test parameters. Any alterations made to the radar have the potential to impact performance and in turn could invalidate the previously granted approvals.
2. Coating the radar with any material, including paint, will change the tested and proven medium through which the microwave pulses are transmitted. The result of which will be a detrimental impact to the radar’s performance.
3. Changing the color of the radar may adversely impact the product’s operating temperature. This increase in temperature has the potential to exceed specified tolerances and damage internal components. Further, the effects of significant temperature gain may distort the plastics, resulting in water ingress.
4. The application of paint may, over time and with the effect of UV radiation from the sun, cause changes in the material properties of the carefully chosen plastics. The results of which could include premature aging, mechanical issues, and/or discoloration.
As a result of these factors, Raymarine does not recommend or support any modifications to the radar housings. Additionally, any aftermarket modifications made to the radar housing, including paint, will void the factory warranty.
