Full Version: [CA11] SeaTalkng, SeaTalk and NMEA2000 in same system

The SeaTalkng reference manual states:
"Limitations when SeaTalk(1) products are connected

If SeaTalkng and SeaTalk(1) products are used together, do NOT connect an NMEA2000 backbone, as this product combination could compromise the integrity of the NMEA2000 system."

This seems to mean that a SeaTalk to SeaTalkng converter can't be in the same backbone as a spur to an NMEA2000 device? Can you explain that further? What happens to the NMEA2000 system in that configuration?

Unfortunately, the SeaTalkng Reference Manual predates the SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converter, not to mention the number of software updates which have been introduced for the SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converter expand its features. When operating with the latest software updates, Raymarine products having a SeaTalkng communications interface are generally compatible with products having a NMEA 2000 communications interface ... SeaTalkng relies on common NMEA 2000 PGNs as well as proprietary PGNs ... in much the same way that third party products supporting NMEA 2000 communications do. The SeaTalkng Reference Manual also deviates from the NMEA 2000 convention whereby each spur should only be interfaced to a single SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 device (rather than supporting daisy chains as is indicated within the SeaTalkng Reference Manual). Raymarine now adheres to the aforementioned NMEA 2000 convention. As no revisions to the SeaTalkng Reference Manual have been introduced or are planned, its primary value to customers are:
- as a reference for SeaTalkng networking components,
- for information concerning how to construct a powered and properly terminated NMEA 2000 backbone which has been constructed from SeaTalkng networking components,
- for information concerning how to balance the LEN load of a NMEA 2000 backbone,
- for information concerning maximum spur lengths, etc.
