[CA11] Correct nmea0183 wind sentence for ST2000+ - prjacobs - 12-15-19 01:37 AM

Hi,
I have an ST2000+ autopilot connected to OpenCPN. I'd like to take advantage of "WindTrim" mode. The manual says I need to receive VWR sentences for that to work, but my wind instrument only puts out WMV sentences.

In a post on this forum, "NMEA0183 Wind Steering on ST2000", post #6, the moderator says, in part "Should the instrument be transmitting MWV NMEA 0183 sentence to the autopilot, then there would be no need to additionally transmit the VWR sentence to the autopilot."
Does this mean that MWV sentences will work for WindTrim mode?

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Peter

Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Peter,

In the Forum thread which you had referenced, the NMEA 0183 wind source was being interfaced to the long retired E85001 PC/SeaTalk/NMEA 0183 Interface Module to which the autopilot was interfaced. As such, the PC/SeaTalk/NMEA 0183 Interface Module rather than the ST2000 was functioning as a NMEA 0183 to SeaTalk data bridge. In the absence of a PC/SeaTalk/NMEA 0183 Interface Module within your system (or third party SeaTalk to NMEA 0183 data bridging device), a product capable of transmitting the NMEA 0183 VWR sentence would be required.

Thanks Chuck. Fortunately I was able to find a Bi-Directional NMEA to WiFi Bridge (http://yakbitz.com/YakBak.aspx) that has a selectable built in translation from MWV to VWR, as well as some other useful features. Happily the "W" now appears on the ST2000+ screen when Standby and Auto are pushed together. I had also experienced trouble getting the ST2000+ to goto a waypoint, which was solved by using the Loop Back feature on this device.
cheers, Peter.
