DSM250 compatible transducer for steel hull - Bridlewilde - 07-21-16 12:52 PM

We are in a dilemma and are having a difficult time trying to find the correct transducer for our sailboat. We need a compatible plastic or stainless steel transducer for older components - a DSM250 Raymarine Fishfinder E62007 model and Raymarine C120 classic multi function Chartplotter for our steel sailboat with a deadrise of 20 degrees. After many hours of research and reading manuals, many failed purchases and recommendations, we have still not reached a satisfactory result. We cannot use a transom mount (we have a Mason 33) nor a bronze . We have done some reading on tilted element transducers but cannot locate any that are compatible. Any suggestions out there? We are very confused. Thanks to any who can shed a glimmer of light.

Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Bridlewilde,

The DSM250 had not been designed for use with tilted element transducers. As such, use of tilted element transducer with the DSM250 may not yield optimum fishfinding performance. It is recommended that a stainless steel fairing block transducer (ex. A102121 SS270) be used for this application. Oddly, Raymarine's SS270 web page specifies that it not be used with metal hulls ... stainless steel is generally material of choice for transducers installed though aluminum or steel hulls. Airmar, Inc. produces the 50/200kHz fishfinder transducers for Raymarine, Inc., and Airmar's installation instructions for the SS270 indicate that it may be used with metal hulls if installed with a fairing block. It correspondingly recommended that Gemeco (Airmar's US distributor) be contacted for any restrictions or additional guidance for installing this SS270 on a steel hull.
