Replacement Radar - [email protected] - 11-11-16 08:15 AM I am looking to replace my existing Raymarine analog system with a new digital system. I upgraded my gps to an A127 model last year so of course the old radar is incompatible. The existing old analog radar is an 48" open array. The old unit sits on a pedestal mount of close to 24". It seems that I could go with any of the currently selling radar units. Note that I do not expect to be a heavy user of radar. If I were to go with a new quantum unit (or any of the closed array units for that matter) my concern would be the new height of the active element being much lower than the current open array active element (above my hairline). The current open array has the motor/base that appears to raise the centerline of the open array active element about 14" above the radar unit mounting surface. A replacement open array would seem to raise the active element to about the same height as the old open array unit. I guess my questions are: 1. The new quantum unit advertises a safer transmission energy. How safe? 2. Are there any dimensions available for the quantum unit? 3. Does the quantum come in different sizes? Not sure if it is 'going to look right' on my 40' sedan bridge. I plan to data cable the new unit and not use wireless even if it is available. Thanks Dave RE: Replacement Radar - Chuck - Raymarine - Moderator - 11-17-16 01:34 PM Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Dave, Q1. The new quantum unit advertises a safer transmission energy. How safe? A1. Unlike the high power output of commercial and military radar transducers, those designed for recreational marine use transmit relatively low power. Quantum radomes have simply further reduced the radar emissions. Raymarine continues to recommend that radomes and open array antennas be installed above head height. Q2. Are there any dimensions available for the quantum unit? A2. The full set of Quantum radome dimensions may be found in Section 3.7 - Dimensions of the Quantum Radar Installation Instructions. Q3. Does the quantum come in different sizes? Not sure if it is 'going to look right' on my 40' sedan bridge. A3. Raymarine only offers one size of Quantum radome. RE: Replacement Radar - pressonjh - 12-20-16 06:04 PM I looked at the install guide online and could not locate a "height" for the open array super HD open array 48" system. Can you tell me what the height is from the bottom of the base pedestal to the top of the antenna is please? I'm considering replacing an older dome system that is mounted on an extension plate in front of and below a pedestal that has a satellite television antenna mounted. Ours is a 42' NP Pilot House vessel with an arch over the fly bridge. Thanks. Jim RE: Replacement Radar - Chuck - Raymarine - Moderator - 12-21-16 08:56 AM Welcome to the Raymarine Forum pressonjh, The requested dimensions may be found within Section 4.1 - Selecting a location of the HD / SHD Digital Open Array Radar Installation Instructions (see drawing below): According to this diagram the requested dimension is 402 mm (15.8 in). |
