Axiom 9 MFD to NMEA0183 VHF radio - SteveME - 05-30-17 08:54 PM

I have a new Axiom 9 RV MFD and wish to connect it to a new VHF Radio w/ DSC capabilities.
I see a lot of similar discussions but not pertaining to the Axiom platform
Thanks

Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Steve,

Does you VHF radio have a SeaTalkng, NMEA 2000, or NMEA 0183 communications interface?

NMEA 0183. After sending out this thread I came across one that seemed to be relevant. I've attached it for reference. I was hoping there would be a little greater functionality.

Steve,

You have indeed referenced the correct FAQ. For the benefit of others viewing this post, the referenced FAQ may be found here. An A06045 0.4m DeviceNet (F) to SeaTalkng Spur Adapter Cable or A06075 1.0m DeviceNet (F) to SeaTalkng Spur Adapter Cable may be used to interface the MFD's NMEA 2000 plug (DeviceNet (M)) to a spur socket of a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone.

Two additional questions about this install shown in the FAQ above...

Q1. Is there a p/n for a cable that connects to the ST1 port on the ST1/STng converter but is bare wire at the VHF NMEA0183 end, or do I need to simply cut the ST1 connector off of the cable supplied with the E22158 converter kit?

Q2. What is the max length of the NMEA0183 wiring between the ST1/STng converter and VHF radio? I'm trying to determine if I have to extend my STng backbone 20 ft to the VHF and have a short NMEA0183 connection with the E22158 STng to ST1 cable (ST1 end cut off), or can I run NMEA0183 cable 20 feet from the converter to the VHF.
Thank You for any help.
Dan

Dan,

Q1. Is there a p/n for a cable that connects to the ST1 port on the ST1/STng converter but is bare wire at the VHF NMEA0183 end, or do I need to simply cut the ST1 connector off of the cable supplied with the E22158 converter kit?
A1. Raymarine does not separately offer this part. In contrast to the photo posted on Raymarine's website, the E70196 VHF NMEA 0183 to STng Converter Kit features bare leads on the cable which will be connected to the ST-STng Converter's SeaTalk port. Alternatively, the press-fit 3-pin plug may be cut off of the cable packaged with the E22158 SeaTalk1 & SeaTalkng Converter Kit and this cable may be interfaced in the manner specified within the referenced FAQ.

A2. Raymarine has not specified a maximum length for extending the NMEA 0183 leads from the subject cable. However, 20' is well within the maximum length for extending Raymarine's NMEA 0183 cables before needing a NMEA 0183 expander.

Good info. Thank you Chuck. I have an unused R38104 cable from a Rs125 that I'll use for the NMEA 0183 run. That's good quality cable.

Question: Could I use a regular STng spur cable on the yellow port of the converter, remove the STng connector from the other end, and use pin 1 (+12) to NMEA 0183 grey and pin 6 (ST1) to NEMA purple as you show in the FAQ?
Many thanks (again)!
Dan

Dan,

Q. Could I use a regular STng spur cable on the yellow port of the converter, remove the STng connector from the other end, and use pin 1 (+12) to NMEA 0183 grey and pin 6 (ST1) to NEMA purple as you show in the FAQ?
A. Doing as you have suggested is not recommended. As you have the left over RS125 cable, this cable would be quite satisfactory for use in creating the required NMEA 0183 extension cable.
