Replacing an a/c/e/eS-Series MFD(s) with an Axiom MFD(s)

MOUNTING: At the time that this FAQ was posted, Raymarine had released the following adapter plates for mounting an Axiom MFD within the flush mounting cutout of an a/c/e/eS-Series MFD:
A80524 Axiom 7 adapter plate for legacy e7 / e7D MFDs
A80526 Axiom 9 adapter plate for legacy a9x MFDs
A80527 Axiom 12 adapter plate for legacy a12x MFDs
A80528 Axiom 12 adapter plate for legacy c12x / e12x MFDs

The latest information on available Axiom adapter plates may be accessed through the Accessories tab of the Axiom 7, 9, or 12 MFD's Ordering Information web page. Mounting templates and cut-out / footprint dimension for the Axiom MFDs may be found here. Mounting templates and cut-out / footprint dimension for the a/c/e-Series MFDs may be found here. Mounting templates and cut-out / footprint dimension for the eS-Series MFDs may be found here.

lease note that the Axiom MFDs may not be installed within an Ethernet (SeaTalkhs/RayNet) network which additionally includes MFDs running LightHouse II software (i.e. a/c/e-Series MFDs). Raymarine's eS/gS-Series MFDs may be updated with LightHouse 3 software to permit them to be interfaced to Axiom MFDs. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing this subject. Updated eS/gS-Series MFDs and Axiom/Axiom Pro/Axiom XL MFDs may be mixed or matched in any combination within an Ethernet network. Updated eS/gS-Series MFDs and Axiom MFDs will share system data, most resources, and most features with one another via the Ethernet network to which they will be interfaced.

POWER: Axiom MFDs are designed be powered via the Power/NMEA 2000 Cable included within the package of the the Axiom MFD. Accordingly, the currently installed power cable will need to be replaced with the Power/NMEA 2000 Cable supplied with the Axiom MFD. Axiom MFDs are designed to be powered from a 12VDC power circuit.

ETHERNET: Should the a/c/e/eS-Series MFD currently be interfaced one other compatible Raymarine product having an Ethernet communications interface, then the RayNet Cable may simply be unplugged from the a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD and then be plugged into the Axiom MFD's Ethernet Network socket. As Axiom MFDs have only one Ethernet Network socket, should the currently installed a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD be interfaced to two or more compatible devices having an Ethernet communications interface, then the Axiom MFD would, as would the other compatible devices having an Ethernet Network communications interface, instead need to be interfaced to an A80007 HS5 RayNet Network Switch.

SEATALKNG / NMEA 2000: Should the Data Master a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD be interfaced as a spur to a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone, then the Data Master Axiom Pro MFD will instead be interfaced to the SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone. Should the vessel's SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone have been constructed using SeaTalkng networking components, then the currently install SeaTalkng Spur Cable will be unplugged from the Data Master a/c/e/eS-Series MFD, adapted with an A06082 SeaTalkng (M) to DeviceNet (F) Spur adapter, and then be plugged into the Axiom Pro MFD's NMEA 2000 socket(s). Should the vessel's SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone have been constructed using third party networking components featuring DeviceNet Micro-C plugs and sockets, then the Axiom Pro MFD's DeviceNet plug may be interfaced as a spur to the NMEA 2000 backbone via an appropriate length (up to 6m) of spur cable from the supplier of the system's NMEA 2000 networking components.

NMEA 0183: An E70196 VHF NMEA 0183 to STng Converter Kit would typically be recommended for those simply seeking to supply GPS data to a DSC VHF radio. For those seeking bidirectional communications with NMEA 0183 listeners and a NMEA 0183 talker, the NMEA 0183 leads of any NMEA 0183 devices which are presently interfaced to the a9x/a12x/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD's NMEA 0183 leads will need to be disconnected from this cable and will instead be interfaced to a NMEA 0183 to SeaTalkng/NMEA 2000 data bridging device (ex. Actisense NGW-1-ISO-STNG, Actisense NGW-1-ISO-AIS, etc.) are available from third parties to support interfacing NMEA 0183 devices to systems featuring Axiom MFDs.

EXTERNAL ALARM: Raymarine has recently released the SeaTalk NG Auxiliary Alarm Buzzer. This buzzer is designed to primarily produce alarms triggered by Raymarine instruments and autopilots.

RADAR: Please click here to view a FAQ addressing how to add radar features to an Axiom MFD or a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD.

FISHFINDER(s): Please click here to view a FAQ addressing how to add fishfinder features to an Axiom MFD. Axiom MFDs are not supported for use with the DSM30, DSM300, CP300, and CP450C.

SATELLITE WEATHER / RADIO: LightHouse 3 software supports SiriusXM Satellite Weather / Radio features when interfaced to SR150 Sirius Satellite Weather / Radio Receiver. Legacy Sirius Satellite Weather / Radio Receiver (i.e. SR100 & SR6) are not compatible with LightHouse 3 software.

VIDEO INPUT: Raymarine’s Axiom MFDs support video input exclusively from IP video sources (ex. CAM210IP, CAM220IP, FLIR M100/M200 Thermal Camera, etc.). Accordingly, should the a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD have been interfaced to an analog video source, then this source would need to be encoded with a third party video encoder (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) to viewed via the Axiom MFD.

VIDEO OUTPUT: Video is broadcast from the MFD via Miracast technology.

CARTOGRAPHY: chart cards which had been successfully used with an a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFD may be retained for use with an Axiom/Axiom Pro/Axiom XL MFD. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing cartography which may be used with Axiom/Axiom Pro/Axiom XL MFDs.

PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION: While the replacement of this equipment is well within the capabilities of those familiar with marine electronics equipment installation, there will be some cable splicing and cable chasing required. Should this not be within your comfort zone or skills, then click here to locate a Certified Raymarine Installer in your area.
