AIS500 with Icom M506 VHF - onreceta - 06-12-17 08:10 AM My sailboat has an older Raymarine system, including an E80 Classic, and an AIS500. Until recently, the AIS500 happily shared the VHF antenna with an Icom M502 VHF. But the M502 is ready to be replaced and, for several good reasons, I plan to purchase it's successor, the Icom M506. The M506 is available with or without a built-in AIS. (Both versions accept NMEA0183 input, and NMEA2000 is also available.) The built-in AIS is attractive, not least because its graphic display will appear on the remote mic which I will install in the cockpit. (The E80 is belowdecks, so this is an advantage for both safety and convenience.) And so here is my question. Can I, and how do I, connect the M506 with my Raymarine? 1. Can the AIS500 still share the VHF antenna with the M506? 2. Will one AIS interfere with the other? 3. If I were to take the AIS500 out of the configuration (although it performs very well), can the information from the M506's AIS show up and be accessed on the E80 as the AIS500 does -- with alarms, and on the chartplotter and radar screen, etc? 4. How do I connect the M506 to the Raymarine? To the AIS500 or to the E80 or both? So far, ICOM tech support has only said to ask Raymarine, saying they only deal with their own equipment. (Like everyone uses their VHF in a void?) And the one dealer I have contacted so far was singularly unhelpful. So I'm really hoping someone on this forum, or with Raymarine, can shed some light... thanks in advance. RE: AIS500 with Icom M506 VHF - Chuck - Raymarine - Moderator - 06-12-17 10:24 AM Welcome to the Raymarine Forum onreceta Q1. Can I, and how do I, connect the M506 with my Raymarine? A1. When updated with the latest available Raymarine product software update, the E-Series Classic MFDs have limited SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 support ... not to include support for SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 PGNs associated with AIS data. As such, a third party AIS receiver/transceiver would need to be interfaced to the MFD's NMEA 0183 Cable, as your AI500 is currently. Q2. Can the AIS500 still share the VHF antenna with the M506? A2. Should the third party VHF radio not also function as a Class B AIS transceiver, then this would indeed be possible. Q3. Will one AIS interfere with the other? A3. Two AIS transceivers should not be simultaneously interfaced to and operated onboard the vessel. Doing so would cause each AIS transceiver to report the other as an AIS target other than ownship. Should the AIS option be included with the third party VHF radio, then it would be recommended that the AIS500 be disconnected from the system. Q4. If I were to take the AIS500 out of the configuration (although it performs very well), can the information from the M506's AIS show up and be accessed on the E80 as the AIS500 does -- with alarms, and on the chartplotter and radar screen, etc? A4. Yes. See the response to Q1 specifying that the products must be interfaced via NMEA 0183 communications. Raymarine MFDs cannot control the Silent Mode state of third party AIS transceivers. Accordingly, Silent Mode state would need to be configured ON/OFF via the corresponding user interface setting of the third party AIS transceiver. Q5. How do I connect the M506 to the Raymarine? To the AIS500 or to the E80 or both? A5. See the response to Q1. Should the VHF radio include the AIS option, then the AIS500 would need to be disconnected from the MFD's NMEA 0183 Cable and removed from the system. The 38400 BAUD leads/terminals of the third party VHF radio would then be interfaced to the corresponding leads of the MFD's NMEA 0183 Cable. |
