The AIS 650 must have its own dedicated GPS antenna connected direct to it in order to transmit vessel details, it is a requirement of CLASS B AIS systems.
This dedicated GPS antenna will not interfere with the system GPS used by the rest of the navigation network - which could be either the internal GPS in the MFD or it could be another external GPS antenna.
