[CA11] Bridging AIS data using ST1 TO STNG - Rom - 10-02-19 08:37 AM

Normally if we want to feed information from say a third party AIS unit which outputs in NMEA0183 to an MFD which doesn't accept NMEA2000 (i.e an Axiom), we use a converter such as the Actisense NGW-1 ( part number A80455). Is there any reason why we wouldn't be able to instead use an ST1 to STNG converter ?

Many thanks for the help.

Kind regards,
Rom

Welcome back to the Raymarine Forum Rom,

The SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converter is not the appropriate device for such data bridging. Unlike the most NMEA 2000 to the NMEA 0183 data bridging devices, the SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converter is neither bi-directional nor is it complete in the data bridging capabilities. In short, the SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converter's NMEA 2000 to NMEA 0183 data bridging capabilities are limited to producing NMEA 0183 sentences containing GPS data for use by communications products requiring GPS data from a 4800 BAUD NMEA 0183 source. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing this subject. For this application, a NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 data bridging device supporting 38400 BAUD NMEA 0183 communications and support for NMEA 0183 sentences including AIS data would be recommended. In this an Actisense NGW-1-ISO-AIS NMEA 2000 to NMEA 0183 data bridging device would typically be recommended.
