[LW11] Integration Axiom 7 DV with old ST60 equipment
Dear all,

I am in need to put together a similar configuration described at http://forum.raymarine.com/showthread.php?tid=366 But I have a more specific question, although broader, once I need to order all the parts from overseas and get them in the US.

In my O'Day 37 sailboat I currently have the configuration depicted on the right hand side of the attached diagram. It is comprised of a ST60 Wind, a ST60 TriData, a SPX-5 Auto Pilot with a ST6002 head and a steering wheel drive. I used to have a RL70C radar/plotter which is dead. The existing equipment are Seatalk1 integrated and there is no other connection onboard.

The RL70C will be replaced by an Axiom. Once my ST60 instruments and the autopilot are working perfectly I will not replace them for now, but want to have them somehow connected to the Axiom Seatalkng network, which will gradually be replacing the old Seatalk1. Another reason to keep the existing ST60s and the existing transducers is I am not scheduled to pull the boat out of the water for the next 12 month at least.

Therefore, what I'd like to ask is the validation of the left-hand side of the attached diagram (drawn in light blue) and a list of the components I will need to order to put this together. I also might want to use a non-Raymarine AIS I have at home, which requires a NMEA0183 connection.

Thanks for the help,

Carlos

RE: [LW11] Integration Axiom 7 DV with old ST60 equipment
Dear Carlos Varela,

Thank you for posting in the forum.

Your ST1 system compromising of the ST60 wind, ST60 Tri-Data, ST6002 autopilot control head and the SP-X5 are all integrated correctly.

To integrate the third party AIS unit on to a STng backbone with an Axiom 7 and ST1 to STng converter you will need to revise your drawing.

To integrate a third party NMEA 0183 AIS unit on to the STng backbone you will need a NMEA conversion gateway, this could be the Acti-sense Gateway click here . It will also require having the AIS software loaded on to the gateway to enable it to operate at the 38400 baud rate.

The STng network will require a power supply of 12v, the ST1 to STng converter kit will come with a power cable for the back bone. I recommend only attaching the yellow and bare wire from the the STng converter to your ST1 network, the ST1 network already has a power source from the SP-X5, you can tape the end of the red wire and tuck away.

Your Axiom 7 will require a female devicenet to STng adaptor cable as will the NMEA conversion gateway to connect them to the STng backbone.

You will also need to purchase the STNG backbone kit as the ST1 to STng converter will not have enough ports for all of the devices on your network.

A list of additional components and part numbers are below;

ST1 to STng converter is E22158
female devicenet to STng cable is A06045
STng starter kit is T70134

Best Regards
Louise

RE: [LW11] Integration Axiom 7 DV with old ST60 equipment
Dear Louise,

Thanks for the answer,

Sounds more complex to add a third party AIS, therefore I am changing plans and planning to do the integration with a Raymarine AIS700. I also want to add a i70 System Pack to my configuration. What additional networking/connection components I need to add to the list you included in your previous message?

I changed the original diagram and would ask you to review it and point out any changes required.

Many thanks,

Carlos

RE: [LW11] Integration Axiom 7 DV with old ST60 equipment
Dear Carlos Varela,

Thank you for the reply.

All of the products connect to the STng network via spur cables that are white, these then connect to the white ports on the 5 way blocks. The blue ports are for terminators and backbone cables for extending the backbone, the STng backbone requires 2 terminators at each end of the STng backbone. Please refer to the STng reference manual click here for more information.

The AIS700 and the Axiom can connect to the STng network via a devicenet cable as mentioned in the previous post. The ITC-5 can also connect straight in to the STng network via a white spur cable.

Many Thanks
Louise

Dear Louise,

Coming back to you to ask you to validate the connection diagram and the cables and connectors list. I redraw the initial diagram, now showing equipment and cable routes over my sailboat sketch.

All ST-60, ST-6002, SPX-5, sensors and components are already there (connections shown in yellow). The new components are the Axiom 7DV, the AIS700, the i70 System Pack, and the ST Ng networking components (Starter Kit and ST1 to STng Converter).

The legacy equipment (with exception of the ST-6002 head) are located in a pod over the main cabin entrance, where I plan to house the iTC-5, ST1 to STng Converter and the ST Ng 5 Waty Connector. The Axiom and the i70 are planed to be housed in a new overhead pod near the helm (my boat has a full size hard dodger over the cockpit).

I am not sure if I have added the Devicenet to STng cables everywhere I need them (only have it from the Axiom). Does the Devicenet to STng cable connects directly to the T-Piece or it needs and additional cable?

Which cable should I use to connect the SPX-5 to the STng network (or it is automatically connected through the ST-60 connection to the Converter kit)?

Will I have just one 12V feed to the system (through the ST1 to STng Converter Kit) or should I power the Axiom also though its 12V feed?

Am I getting the connection Converter Kit to the Starter Kit and the STng backbone right?

At this point I am planning not to use the Axion DV transducer.

Please let me know your comments and recommendations.

Best regards,

Carlos

RE: [LW11] Integration Axiom 7 DV with old ST60 equipment
Hi Carlos Varela,

Thank you for your post.

Looking at your drawing, the i70 display will need to connect to the STng backbone via a spur cable and not directly in to the Axiom display. The devicenet to STng cable connects directly from the Axiom into a white port from either a T-piece or a 5 way block on the backbone.
The STng backbone will require its own 12v source as you have demonstrated in your drawing. The Axiom, SPX5, AIS and VHF will also require their own 12v source with a fuse as instructed in their installation manuals.
You have the SPX5 connected to ST1 and the STng network, remove the STng cable between the ITC5 and the SPX5. Leave the SPX5 on the ST1 network as you have drawn.
You have the legacy ST60 instruments with wind, speed and depth along with the i70 with wind, speed and depth. You will only require one set of these transducers on the network, this will be down to personal preference. If you keep the ST60 transducers you can use the i70 display as a repeater, you will not require the ITC-5 if you choose this option. Alternatively, if you update the transducers with the ITC-5, the ST60 displays can also be used as repeaters.

Many Thanks
Louise
