Chuck,
Thank you for the post. I thought that there was only to be one 12v supply to the Seatalkng network and that included the displays. If I understand your post I now need to add 12v supplies for each of the displays. If I had realized that I would have pulled the power wires when I pulled the Seatalkng and the Ethernet cables. Should they each be on a separate 5 amp breaker?

In the helm pod is it acceptable to put the three instruments in series and then into the display and the display to the backbone with a spur cable or should I use the 5 port connector that I am showing?

I have searched the internet for the 1/8" female spade connectors but have only found 1/4" so far. I will continue looking.

A1) While a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone is designed to supply power to instrument (ex. i70, i60, i50, etc.) and autopilot control heads (ex. p70, ST70, etc.), MFDs are not designed to be powered by or supply power to a SeaTalkng backbone. These products must be powered via the Power/NMEA 0183/Video Input Cables as is specified within the Installation Manuals for the MFDs. The power circuit supplying power to each eS98 MFD is to be protected with a 15A fuse / thermal breaker.

A2) Up to three instruments may be daisy chained to form a single spur such as one may desire for installing products within an instrument pod. The maximum total length of any such spur should not exceed 6m.

I cannot find in the HS5 instruction manual the recommended size for the circuit breaker for the power supply to this device. I assume it will be 5 amp but would appreciate confirmation. For the radar and each MFD I am using 15 amp breakers and for the autopilot I am using a 40 amp breaker and for the Seatalkng I am using a 5 amp breaker. Is it possible to run both of the MFDs off of one 15 amp breaker?

The installation manual for the HS5 RayNet Network Switch may be found here. According to the specifications portion of the installation manual, the power consumption of the switch is < 2.5 W (i.e. < 600 mA @ 12 V). It is correspondingly recommended that the circuit be protected with a 2A fuse.

Raymarine recommends that circuit for the SeaTalkng backbone be protected with a 3A fuse. As power circuit of each eS98 MFD is specified to be protected with a 15A fuse/breaker, it is not advised that the two MFDs be powered from a single 15A breaker.

I'm making great progress and am now working on the new autopilot. I have a rudder reference mounted from the old ST7000 unit. I do not think it was damaged in the lightning strike. Can I use this or must I remove it and replace it with the new rudder reference that came with the new ACU400?

Wrandy,

It is recommended that your rudder reference transducer be tested per the FAQ found here. Should the rudder reference transducer be deemed to be operational, then it may simply be interfaced to the Evolution autopilot's ACU.

Chuck,
Thanks to your comments and advice. Today I started up my new electronics system and everything worked! The only glitch is that when we tell the autopilot to turn to starboard it turns to port and vice versa and the rudder reference reads backwards. I know that reversing the autopilot clutch wires will correct the steering issue and there are two wires that need to be reversed to correct the rudder reference issue but will have to read a little more in the manual to see which two need to be reversed. It was wonderful to see all the instruments come on and work right off the bat! Thank you for all of your help. Now I just need to understand all the flexibility that I have. That should make good winter reading.

I seem to have lost the little clip on part that covers the two soft switches above the knob on one of the two eS98 displays that I installed. Is there a part number that I can use to order a replacement? I think it got in with the packing material that was discarded.
