Interfacing Axiom MFDs to devices having a NMEA 0183 communications interface
Interfacing Axiom MFDs to devices having a NMEA 0183 communications interface
To accommodate the higher bandwidth communications requirements some Raymarine products (ex. radar transducers, fishfinder sounder modules, IP cameras, thermal cameras, SiriusXM Satellite Weather Receivers, etc.), the Axiom MFDs feature Ethernet and Wi-Fi communications interfaces. The Axiom MFDs additionally feature a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 communications interface to support relatively low bandwidth communications with Raymarine and third party marine electronics products which also have a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 communications interface. As the marine electronics industry has increasing moved away from NMEA 0183 in favor of NMEA 2000 communications protocol for lower bandwidth data communications, the Axiom MFDs do not feature a NMEA 0183 communications interface. Accordingly, should one need to interface an Axiom MFD to a device having a NMEA 0183 communications interface, but lacking a SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 communications interface, then it will be necessary install a NMEA 0183 to SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 data bridging device (ex. Actisense NGW-1-ISO-STNG, Actisense NGW-1-ISO-AIS, etc.) to support interfacing these products. The MFD and NMEA 0183 to SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 data bridging device will each be interfaced as an individual spur to a powered and properly terminated backbone which may be constructed from Raymarine SeaTalkng or third party NMEA 2000 networking components.
