The equation for calculation of the diameter of the base of a transducer cone is cone base diameter = 2 * (tangent (transducer cone angle / 2) * depth of the water beneath the transducer). The cone angle of CHIRP (conical) sonar element of transducers designed for use with Dragonfly, CP100, ax8 MFDs, eSx8 MFDs, Axiom DV MFDs, Axiom RV MFDs and Axiom Pro RVX MFDs is approximately 25 degrees. CHIRP (conical) sonar is sampling a much larger area in the fore-aft axis. This increased area of coverage combined with color variation based upon strength of the sonar returns permit the CHIRP (conical) sonar to be the sonar of choice for marking fish.

The DownVision sonar elements of transducers designed for use with Dragonfly, Wi-Fish, CP100, ax8 MFDs, eSx8 MFDs, Axiom DV MFDs, Axiom RV MFDs and Axiom Pro RVX MFDs is approximately 60 degrees in the side to side axis and 1.4 degrees in the fore/aft axis. The thin, but relatively wide sonar imagery slices produced by the DownVision elements are combined to produce the detailed DownVision sonar image. DownVision sonar would be the choice of these types of sonar when seeking the greatest two dimensional detail for bottom structure and objects within the water column.

The RealVision sonar elements of transducers designed for use with Axiom RV MFDs and Axiom Pro RVX MFDs is approximately 180 degrees in the side to side axis and 1.4 degrees in the fore/aft axis. The thin, but relatively wide sonar imagery slices produced by the RealVision transducer elements are combined to produce the detailed RealVision 3Dâ„¢sonar image. RealVision 3Dâ„¢ sonar would be the choice of these types of sonar when seeking the greatest three dimensional detail for bottom structure and objects within the water column.

Example #1 CHIRP (conical) sonar cone base diameter at depth:
..... cone base diameter = (2 * tangent (25 degrees / 2)) * Depth
..... cone base diameter = (2 * tangent (12.5 degrees)) * Depth
..... cone base diameter = 0.4434 * Depth

.... cone base diameter at 10' depth = 0.4434 * 10' = 4.434'
.... cone base diameter at 30' depth = 0.4434 * 30' = 13.02'
.... cone base diameter at 100' depth = 0.4434 * 100' = 44.34'
.... cone base diameter at 500' depth = 0.4434 * 500' = 221'


Example #2: DownVision side to side axis dimension at depth:
..... side to side axis dimension = (2 * tangent (60 degrees / 2)) * Depth
..... side to side axis dimension = (2 * tangent (30 degrees)) * Depth
..... side to side axis dimension = 1.154 * Depth

.... side to side axis dimension at 10' depth = 1.154 * 10' = 11.54'
.... side to side axis dimension at 30' depth = 1.154 * 30' = 34.62'
.... side to side axis dimension at 100' depth = 1.154 * 100' = 115.4'
.... side to side axis dimension at 500' depth = 1.154 * 500' = 577'


Example #3: DownVision fore to aft axis dimension at depth:
..... fore to aft axis dimension = (2 * tangent (1.4 degrees / 2)) * Depth
..... fore to aft axis dimension = (2 * tangent (0.7 degrees)) * Depth
..... fore to aft axis dimension = 0.01222 * Depth

.... fore to aft axis dimension at 10' depth = 0.01222 * 10' = 0.1222'
.... fore to aft axis dimension at 30' depth = 0.01222 * 30' = 0.3665'
.... fore to aft axis dimension at 100' depth = 0.01222 * 100' = 1.222''
.... fore to aft axis dimension at 500' depth = 0.01222 * 500' = 6'
