Wi-Fish vs Navionics Boating App with Dragonfly products

Dragonfly PRO models and the Wi-Fish feature built in Wi-Fi. Anglers can stream Dragonfly sonar data right to their smartphone or tablet with the Raymarine Wi-Fishâ„¢ mobile app. The Wi-Fish mobile app puts Dragonfly sonar vision right in the palm of your hand, plus you can rewind and capture sonar images to share online with friends.

The latest version of the Wi-Fish app now adds the Augmented Reality feature to the fishfinder imagery features which it had previously supported. This new feature, unique to the Wi-Fish app, works with the smartphone/tablet's GPS, compass and camera in your smartphone or tablet to show where saved waypoints are in relation to your present position (only within the Augmented Reality feature). The name, symbol, bearing and range to each waypoint is displayed as a dynamic overlay on a real-time view of the waterway in front of you (see the screen snapshot below). You can find more information concerning Wi-Fish's Augmented Reality feature within Raymarine's blog article announcing the Augmented Reality App and this Augmented Reality App presentation.

When used in conjunction with a Dragonfly Pro display and a GPS equipped cell phone, the Wi-Fish app may display the vessel's location on maps downloaded from Apple Maps. The instructions for doing so call for the iPhone or iPad to first connect to the Internet and then use the Apple Maps application to pan around the location where you will be boating. Doing so will effectively cause the phone to save Apple Maps data from area panned. It it these maps which will later be displayed within the Wi-Fish app. However, it should be noted that the Apple Maps are primarily intended for street navigation and do not include any nautical chart detail (ex. spot soundings, depth contours, navaids, etc.). Those seeking such chart detail along with Dragonfly sonar imaging to be displayed on their mobile device having and internal GPS sensor would be advised to use the Navionics Boating app.

The following screen snapshot from the Wi-Fi CHIRP DownVisionâ„¢ Sonar web page shows a mobile device running the Navionics Boating app, not the Wi-Fish app. Unlike the Wi-Fish app, the Navionics Boating app is designed to display fishfinder imagery from the Dragonfly display along with detailed Navionics navigational cartography loaded within the mobile device. The position of the mobile device is displayed within the Navionics boating app if the mobile device is able to acquire a position fix via its own position sensing circuitry.
