MFDs featuring touchscreen-only interfaces are an excellent choice for those who will not be using the MFD under environmental conditions where it will be very cold or where the screen of the MFD will be wet with rain or spray. Under such conditions, the MFD may be non-responsive to touches and/or appear to execute random commands. Another vessel operating condition which may prove difficult to interact with a MFD featuring a touch screen is one in which the vessel is being subjected to jarring or slamming (ex. operating underway while a vessel is on plane in rough conditions, etc.), which may in turn make it difficult to accurately touch the screen in a manner which would permit otherwise permit use under calm vessel operating conditions. One way to overcome these limitations would be to interface a a compatible remote keypad (ex. RMK-9/10 Remote KeyPad, etc.) to the MFD. The MFD's Touch Lock feature may then be enabled when the conditions specified above prohibit operation of the MFD via its touchscreen.

MFDs featuring HybridTouch interfaces (ex. e-Series, eS-Series, Axiom Pro MFDs, etc.) feature both touchscreen and button / UniController interfaces to support interaction with the these MFDs under all supported conditions. When the conditions specified above prohibit operation of the MFD via its touchscreen, then the MFD's touchscreen may be locked and the MFD's buttons / UniController may be used to interact with the MFD. MFDs with HybridTouch interfaces would generally be considered the MFD of choice when operating under the adverse operating conditions specified above.
