[TG] [TG11] Axiom 12 continually reboots after 3.6.32 update

[TG11] Axiom 12 continually reboots after 3.6.32 update
In anticipation of operating a drone with my Axiom 12, I updated the software on my 3 Axiom MFDs (Axiom12, Axiom12 Pro and Axiom 9) a few days ago. Updates on all three MFDs appeared to complete without issues. Today when I powered up the instruments, I selected the fishfinder on the Axiom 12, a message covered the lower third of the screen that said "Transducer not connected" (I have a pair of RV-212s) and the Axiom 12 kept rebooting itself. If I select the fishfinder from the Axiom Pro, I also get the "Transducer not connected" but get a broken up stream of real 3d and the pro does not reboot. I did not test the function of the Axiom 9 as it was up on the flybridge.

Is there a way I can downgrade the software on my MFDs? (I believe I was at 3.4.102 previously).

I can gather screenshots/diagnostics if needed.

Dante

RE: [TG11] Axiom 12 continually reboots after 3.6.32 update
Hello Dante,

We don't generally recommend downgrading software - there are circumstances where it's ok, but I would only do so if advised to do so by Raymarine product support. In this case I would not downgrade software because this is not something as simple as a software bug in v3.6.32: if it were, we'd be inundated with similar reports.

We are investigating reports of intermittent mis-detection of RealVision transducers, but the only case where I personally have been involved turned out to be a vessel power-supply problem. In that instance the transducer was detected correctly when the engines were off, idling or at low speed, but the MFD alarmed 'No transducer connected' once the boat speed reached a certain speed, until the house battery was disconnected from the start battery. After that, the sounder worked at all speeds. I have the local dealer visiting the boat with an oscilloscope over the next few days and am very keen to see what horribly noisey charging supply was causing the problem.

With that in mind, unstable voltage (not necessarily low, just not purely DC) is a likely cause of the MFD instability you've described as well as perhaps the transducer connection issues. Frustratingly this won't show up on a multimeter, only on a more specialised test tool such as an oscilloscope, because a mutimeter samples the voltage much too slowly to capture the very short rises or dips that cause the problems, which can be only millliseconds long.

I would suggest either:
- having a good technical dealer check the supply with an oscilloscope at a time when the problem's occurring
- testing the system with other devices powered off, all sources of charging disconnected/powered off etc. in order to try to make sure that the supply is a straight 12 (or 24) VDC to see whether that makes a difference
- having the system checked by your nearest Raymarine service centre

Tom

Checked with all other equipment off. Axiom 12 reboots, comes up to main screen after about 15 seconds, reboots again. Can not initiate a power off. Everything was working perfectly until firmware update. On main screen of Axiom 12 Pro, fishfinder is greyed out.

RE: [TG11] Axiom 12 continually reboots after 3.6.32 update
Hello Dante,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been out of the office a lot recently doing dealer training and the like.

That behaviour sounds like one of 3 things to me:
  1. An incomplete software update - either the display in question was interrupted during the software update, or not all displays in the network got the same software during the update
  2. Corrupted internal configuration in the subject display, that would be recovered by a full reset
  3. A power-supply issue
  4. A hardware fault

I had a report today from a boat in Europe that I've been assisting with, that had very similar symptoms and was resolved by changing the power cable, it seems that there was a poor contact perhaps in the inline fuse-holder, so I would suggest not discounting the 3rd option.
I would also suggest doing a full power-on reset on the suspect display. Before I note how to do this, however, I must warn you that:
  1. This will remove any Digital Switching custom page setup in the display, so if you have such a setup, do NOT do the following procedure or you will not longer be able to use the Digital Switching until the custom pages are reinstalled through the supplying dealer.
  2. This will remove all other user data and setup, including all waypoints, Homescreen app setup etc.

With that warning in mind, to do a power-on reset you should:
  • Remove power from the display (batteries or breaker off or power cable removed)
  • Re-apply power
  • Swipe to power on if you need to, then keep swiping left (backwards) on the power control unit the power LED backlight turns blue.
  • Stop swiping and wait until a new menu appears, then use left-right swipes to select Factory Reset, accept and restart.
As I say (to anyone else reading), do not do this unless you are absolutely certain that you don't have Digital Switching custom pages and have backed up all of your user data.

After this, if you suspect a hardware problem with your display then I'd get the supplying or local technical dealer or your nearest Raymarine service centre to check it out.

Regards,
Tom
