[CA11] Upgrade & Network System Integration
As an interim upgrade pending funds for an Axiom Pro 12, Quantum 2 Chirp & Ray90, would the attached network & integration upgrade work please?

The intention is to remove the existing ST290 DPU & transponder pods, retain the Data & Graphic displays as repeaters only, and the existing transponders with a new ITC5?

Power would come from the SPX30.

Comments appreciated.

Thanks

BR

JP

RE: [CA11] Upgrade & Network System Integration
Welcome to the Raymarine Forum JP,

With the exception of the ST290 analog displays (these feature a SeaTalk communications interface as your diagram also acknowledges), ST290 products (DPU, Graphic/Data displays) are not supported (neither designed nor tested) for use within Raymarine's currently manufactured products. Unfortunately, the largest graphical displays offered by Raymarine are the i70S MFIDs.

Regarding the AIS700, as indicated within FAQ found here, the AIS transceiver must be interfaced to the E-Series Classic MFD's NMEA 0183 communications interface rather then via SeaTalkng/NMEA 2000.

RE: [CA11] Upgrade & Network System Integration
Hi Chuck,

Thanks for your help with this.

From the attached V2.0, could the ST290 DPU & ST2 Displays be retained almost as a standard alone system, repeating data provided from the STng backbone across the STng => ST1 converter?

In this configuration I would look to upgrade generally with Axiom Pro 12, P70s, 2 x i70s, Ray 90, AIS700, RS150, ITC 5, and Quantum 2 Dopler.

Thanks.

RE: [CA11] Upgrade & Network System Integration
JPenny1961,

Diagram notes:
- The ST290 MastHead Wind Transducers are not compatible with the iTC-5. Raymarine's currently offered masthead wind transducer (first introduced for the ST60 instruments) must be used with the iTC-5.
- The ST-STng Converter is not supported (has not been designed and tested) for use with the ST290 DPU. This said, a similar configuration had been previously recommended for systems running E-Series Classic MFDs and ST290 product. You may want to try connecting the ST290 DPU as shown within your diagram and see how the system performs. That said, should the system not perform properly, then the only option would be to remove the ST290 DPU and its displays from the system or consider a more complex means of connecting them to the system (ex. NMEA 0183 output from Axiom Pro MFD to Brookhouse MUX w/SeaTalk option to ST290 DPU).
- It is considered to be a best installation practice to power the system's SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000 backbone from dedicated switched circuit rather than from the autopilot's course computer or ACU. Please click here to view a FAQ addressing this subject. The power insertion spur should be located at the approximate midpoint of the backbone's LEN load.

RE: [CA11] Upgrade & Network System Integration
Hi Chuck,

Thanks for your help with this, and comments appreciated & understood.

From elsewhere on this forum I understand that the SPX30 must run the most recent software version to enable control from a P70S, and that pending a future upgrade to Evolution Autopilot it will be necessary for me to run the Axiom Pro 12 with Lighthouse II to retain MFD autopilot control of the current SPX30. If this is correct:

Q: Is there a way to interrogate the SPX30 as to its current software version from either the current E120 Classic or, proposed replacement Axiom Pro 12

Q: If the SPX software does require updating, can it be done via the Axiom Pro12 across STng?

Thanks

BR

RE: [CA11] Upgrade & Network System Integration
JP,

Q1. Axiom Pro 12 with Lighthouse II to retain MFD autopilot control of the current SPX30. If this is correct:
A1. This is not correct. The Axiom Pro 12 MFD will indeed run the latest LightHouse 3 software. Axiom MFDs are not compatible with LightHouse II software. This simply means that the MFD's Autopilot Controls feature may not be used. Instead, the autopilot control head will need to be used to engage the A

Q2: Is there a way to interrogate the SPX30 as to its current software version from either the current E120 Classic or, proposed replacement Axiom Pro 12
A2. While not possible to check the SPX30's software via the E120, it would be possible to check its software level via the autopilot's control head. If uncertain, then you should attempt to update the SPX30's software via the E80 (if the E80 has been interfaced via SeaTalkng to the autopilot), as it cannot be updated via an Axiom/Axiom Pro/Axiom XL MFD. Alternatively, the SPX30 may be sent to Raymarine's Product Repair Center to have its software updated.

Q3: If the SPX software does require updating, can it be done via the Axiom Pro12 across STng?
A3. Negative ... see the response to Q2.
