[CA11] ST80 compass testing
I have the st6000+ auto pilot and no problem for the 2 yrs we have used it. We left a port and noticed the heading flashes once per second and varies plus or minus about 15 degrees. When Auto mode or Auto and Track are engaged the rudder is turning erratically for a few seconds and then goes hard to port. This is consistent when we have tried multiple times.

I have tested and confirmed the rudder reference M81105 is working.

The system components include:

E80 classic

ST6000+Autopilot cont,(which has the fluctuations on heading)

Type100 autopilot,(the ST80 is not wired directly in the ports marked fluxgate)

ST60 Tridata,(working)

ST60 compass, (which seems to work)

ST80 fluxgate compass, (it’s a steel boat and the compass is mounted above deck on a 6’ mast)

DSM300

Seatalk hs network

Is there a way to test the ST80 compass?

If it’s bad, what unit could replace it?

We are on a trip and hope to get the autopilot function back.
Any help would be appreciated

RE: [CA11] ST80 compass testing
Welcome to the Raymarine Forum jlukey,

Based upon the symptoms reported, it the ST80 compass is beginning to fail. Unlike the M81190 Fluxgate compass, there are no tests which one may perform to the ST80 Compass. Unlike the M81190 Fluxgate compass (shown below), the ST80 Compass (shown below it) is designed to support NMEA 0183 or SeaTalk communications rather than analog signals. The M81190 Fluxgate compass is designed to be interfaced to the autopilot course computer's Compass terminals and is designed to be calibrated and aligned via the autopilot's control head. It is recommended that the ST80 Compass be replaced with the M81190 Fluxgate compass and that it then be calibrated and aligned per the autopilot's instruction guide.
