Installing STng 5-way connector block
The STng 5-Way connector block forms a key part of an STng network system, connecting the backbone and enabling spurs to be connected to the backbone.
Connector blocks that are not installed correctly can lead to various issues such as the Data Lines being corrupted, interrupted or shorted, preventing data from flowing around the network or triggering intermittent faults. Here is some guidance on how to avoid such issues. Cable Bend Radius When installing the SeaTalkng cables with the 5-way connector block, it is important to maintain the recommended cable bend radius. We recommend to NOT bend the cables excessively. Wherever possible, ensure a minimum bend diameter of 200mm (8 in)/ minimum bend radius of 100mm (4 in). If the cables are strained entering the 5-way connector block, the connector seal may be compromised, allowing water ingress to the pins. To help reduce the risk of un-supported/strained cables allowing water to enter the socket, we recommend that the 5-way blocks are mounted facing down with the cables exiting the bottom, to allow water to flow away from the block connectors. Mounting Locations of the Connectors We recommend the 5-Way connector blocks (A06064) are mounted in locations protected from direct water or subject to condensation (i.e. not installed in the bilge). We also wish to remind you that these 5-Way connectors are not tested to meet the Ignition Protection standard BS EN 28846:2003. Therefore, the connectors are NOT to be mounted in Engine Compartments, Gas Lockers or Fuel Tank spaces. Mounting Screws The SeaTalkng 5-way block has two mounting holes for [censored] the unit to a suitable flat surface. Use of incorrect sized screws will cause damage to the housing (visible cracks) of the 5-way connector, and so water could enter the unit, leading to damage to the internal electrical contacts or cause a short circuit, interrupting data flow or possible shorting the power supply. You must use Pan Head screws up to a maximum diameter of 3mm when mounting the 5-Way Connector Block (We recommend #4 screws). It is important that Countersunk screws are NOT used since these will cause cracking around the local area. General maintenance We recommend that some general inspection and maintenance is performed on the SeaTalkng network at regular intervals in order to identify any potential problem developing and to prevent an unnecessary breakdown. Things to consider during installation and on a yearly basis: • To help reduce the risk of un-supported/strained cables allowing water to enter the socket, we recommend that the 5-way blocks are mounted facing down, with the cables exiting the bottom. • Ensure adequate strain relief is provided to support the cables. • It is recommended that the STng system is powered off when not being used. It is not advised to leave the system running all the time. • Protect all cables and connectors from physical damage and exposure to heat. Use trunking or conduit where possible for cables. Do NOT run cables through bilges or doorways, or close to moving or hot objects. • Do not install connectors in bilges and install in protected environments. • Secure cables in place using tie-wraps or lacing twine. Secure connectors using suitable Screws. Coil any extra cable and tie it out of the way. • Always use Blanking plugs if no cable has been used within a socket – to protect the socket pins. • Do NOT run cables/connectors near to engines or fluorescent lights. • Do NOT install connectors in Engine Rooms or near to Fuel Tanks. • Ensure a suitable sized Fuse has been installed (not too large Fuse rating for the system). • Perform routine checks on connections, for signs of Water Ingress/Corrosion RAYFAQ# |
