CP470 vs 1kW CHIRP Sonar Circuitry of Axiom Pro RVS MFDs

Those seeking deep water CHIRP sonar performance, are advised to consider a Raymarine 1kW CHIRP transducer or Raymarine 1kW CHIRP Transducer Pair. When considering whether to install a CHIRP Sounder Module or an Axiom Pro RVS MFD to process the signal from the 1kW CHIRP Transducer(s), the question sometimes arises as to whether there is an advantage of one over the other. In short, the internal 1kW CHIRP sonar circuitry within an Axiom Pro RVS MFD is designed to be the functional equivalent of that found within the CP470 CHIRP Sonar Module. By including 1kW CHIRP sonar circuitry within the body of the Axiom Pro RVS MFDs, the installation may be simplified and costs may be lessened. Reasons to consider installation of a CHIRP Sounder Module rather than use the internal 1kW CHIRP Sonar Circuitry within an Axiom Pro RVX MFD include:

- modular system design ... in the unlikely event of a CP470 or CP570 failure, then 1kW CHIRP Sonar Module, rather than the MFD, would need to be serviced. This would preserve the bulk of marine electronics functionality onboard until such time as the CP470 or CP570 has been serviced and reinstalled.

- redundancy ... in the unlikely event of a CP470 or CP570 failure, should an Axiom Pro RVX MFD be installed onboard, then the 1kW CHIRP transducer may be connected to the Axiom Pro RVX MFD until such time as the CP470 or CP570 has been serviced and reinstalled.

- transducer cable chasing issues. By installing a CP470 or CP570 within relatively close proximity to the 1kW CHIRP Transducer, then relatively smaller diameter Ethernet communications cable rather than the transducer's cable would instead be chased.

The CP470 and CP570 CHIRP Sonar Modules were initially introduced for use with MFDs running LightHouse II software (i.e. the a/c/e/eS/gS-Series MFDs). However, these CHIRP Sonar Modules may also be used with MFDs running LightHouse 3 software (ex. Axiom, Axiom Pro MFDs, etc.). For those seeking to ultimate in high power CHIRP sonar performance, it would recommended that a CP570 CHIRP Sonar Module be installed within the system.
