Hi Chuck,
Just wanted to close the loop on this, the problem with the speed-through-water registering as zero after installing the new eS-series MFD. Turns out the problem was some growth or mud was clogging up the paddlewheel. I pulled out the transducer with the boat still in the water - a bunch of water came in but I had the blanking insert handy to put in. Cleaned out the impeller cavity as best I could and reinstalled. Works like a champ now and was able to enjoy my 3 day passage with fully functional True Wind Speed and Direction information.
I like the eS, I see why the company made the improvements, and that's just sticking with Lighthouse 2.
