Hi Bob,

The cable from the MFD has the following colours and purposes

Green NMEA Input -ve
White NMEA Input +ve
Yellow NMEA Output +ve
Brown NMEA Output -ve

Therefore the connections you describe make no sense. Therefore you need to check the cables that should be connected and where they are connected to in order to correctly identify whether the NMEA is inbound or outbound or both to the MFD.
