Hi Chuck,
Just planning the installation and I find that the layout will be more convenient if I use a SeatalkNG spur cable to the ST2000+ tiller pilot.
Q. 1
Is it ok to connect the autpilot direct to the ST/STNG converter as a spur?
Q. 2
To connect a Seatalk NG spur cable to the autopilot, are the pin/cable colour combinations the same as for ST1? That is:
- Black to Pin 2
- Yellow to Pin 4
- Red disconnected?

This thread has become too long and has featured too many topics to address your latest questions. Please provide a system diagram (a photo of a hand drawn diagram will suffice) showing each device within the system and how you have proposed interfacing them to one another.

Hi Chuck,
please see the attached diagram.
The diagram has been altered from the previous version to reflect the physical layout better.
The only significant configuration change is that the ST2000+ Tiller pilot is now connected to Seatalk NG (instead of Seatalk 1).

Could you please let me know if this system will work?

Dave,

1) The ST2000+ should not be interfaced to the system as your diagram has shown. While your diagram correctly indicates how the ST60+ instruments should be interfaced to the system, the ST2000+ cannot be interfaced to the backbone via a spur (white) socket as is shown within your diagram. The ST2000+ may be interfaced to the system by either:

- adding a third ST-STng Converter to the backbone and connect the ST2000+ to the SeaTalk (yellow) socket of the additional ST-STng Converter. The required cable features a yellow plug which will be mated to the SeaTalk (yellow) socket of the ST-STng Converter. If electing to do so, only the cable's data (yellow) and ground (shield) leads will be connected to the ST2000+'s SeaTalk port. The cable's power (red) lead will not be used and will be insulated to prevent shorting.

- Interface the ST2000+ to one of the other SeaTalk busses which are presently interfaced to a ST-STng Converter. The simplest way to accomplish this would be to connect the ST-STng Converter Cable supplied with one of the ST-STng Converters to a D244 SeaTalk Junction block. One set of ST60+ instruments would then be joined to the D244 via an appropriate length of SeaTalk Cable. The ST2000+ would also be joined to the D244 via an appropriate length of SeaTalk Cable. As in the option above, only the data (yellow) and ground (shield) leads of the SeaTalk cable connecting the ST2000+ to the SeaTalk bus will be connected to the ST2000+'s SeaTalk port.

2) As with the ST2000+, the (2) ST60+ Graphic displays cannot be interfaced to the backbone via a spur (white) socket as is shown within your diagram. The (2) ST60+ Graphic Instruments may be interfaced to the system by either:

- adding a another ST-STng Converter to the backbone and connect the (2) ST60+ Graphic Instruments to the SeaTalk (yellow) socket of the additional ST-STng Converter. The required cable features a yellow plug which will be mated to the SeaTalk (yellow) socket of the ST-STng Converter.

- Interface the (2) ST60+ Graphic Instruments to one of the other SeaTalk busses which are presently interfaced to a ST-STng Converter. The simplest way to accomplish this would be to connect the ST-STng Converter Cable supplied with one of the ST-STng Converters to a D244 SeaTalk Junction block. Hi Chuck,
sorry that last layout was pretty dumb of me.
I guess it was worth posting as a lesson...we really need to remember that ST NG is not ST 1...and also think a lot about the physical layout and where the wires go before we try to lay out the connections.

Could please have your words of wisdom on the attached layout.
Hoping this will be the last one I ask you to check out.

Your latest diagram appears to be correct in all aspects except for one. The ST60+ instrument which is shown as being directly connected to the ST2000+ shows three SeaTalk cables being plugged into it. As each ST60+ instrument features only two SeaTalk ports, this is not possible. To correct the diagram, it is recommended that the ST2000+ and SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converter Cable be connected to a D244 SeaTalk Junction Block, which will in turn be connected to the ST60+ instrument via an appropriate length of SeaTalk cable having molded press-fit plugs on each end of the cable.

HI Chuck,
Finally it is all installed and all sensors (compass, log and wind) have been calibrated and appear to be giving good data. I did some trials in calm conditions with slack tide and heading/COG and Speed/SOG are closely matched.

The layout is slightly different to my last sketch. I have connected the ST 2000 to a second ST1/STng converter as you suggested earlier in the forum. Revised sketch attached.

Comms look good on both ST1 and STng with data sharing across the wind, depth, tiller pilot, plotter and ST60+ Graphic.

You're welcome.

Your latest diagram is incorrect with regard to the direction of NMEA 0183 communications via the A70D's NMEA 0183 lead. The MFD's yellow and brown leads are responsible for NMEA 0183 transmissions from the MFD. Similarly, the MFD's white and green leads are responsible for reception of NMEA 0183 by the MFD.

The diagram also shows the ST2000 being powered from a 5A breaker. The ST2000 should be powered from a 10A breaker
