[CA] [CA11] Upgrading from E7 to Axiom 9 - cables/converters needed?

RE: [CA11] Upgrading from E7 to Axiom 9 - cables/converters needed?
A few more hours spelunking, but found the Autohelm computer for the ST7000+.
Hi res photo too big to upload but can be viewed here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/SzhQQcFeFduwXndi8

to see what connections are used on the wiring terminal block. One of the two sets SeaTalk cables had been cut. The other presumably is intact to the ST7000+.

Now since I've only powered up the Axiom 9 and haven't configured or updated the software yet, perhaps when that's done the Axiom will see the Autohelm in the onscreen network anyway?

If not, any advice on how to get them to talk nice to each other and if the Axiom routes can be followed would be fabulous Chuck.

Long process and thanks for your patience. Learning lots at my.end anyway!

RE: [CA11] Upgrading from E7 to Axiom 9 - cables/converters needed?
Scott,

The Type 100/300 autopilot course computers featured both SeaTalk and NMEA 0183 communications interfaces. Per the FAQ found here, SeaTalk to SeaTalkng Converters are not compatible with autopilot course computers preceding the S1/S1G/S2/S2G/S3/S3G. This leaves the autopilot course computer's NMEA 0183 interface as a possible means of interfacing the autopilot to the system. Unfortunately unlike Axiom Pro MFDs, Axiom MFDs do not feature a NMEA 0183 communications interface. However, as indicated within the previously referenced FAQ, the Actisense NGW-1-ISO-STNG NMEA 0183 to SeaTalkng/NMEA 2000 data bridge may be used to interface the autopilot course computer's NMEA 0183 input port to a spur socket within the backbone. The autopilot control head, whether it remains the ST7000 or is replaced with a p70S/p70RS will need to be directly interfaced to one of the Type 100/300 autopilot course computer's SeaTalk sockets via an appropriate length of SeaTalk cable.

When interfaced to the system as specified above, the system will support the autopilot's Track mode feature.

RE: [CA11] Upgrading from E7 to Axiom 9 - cables/converters needed?
Thank you Chuck. Understood. Easier install with the required SeaTalkng/NMEA 0183 data bridge at least, as the 300 course computer has a bare wire terminal block and soldering and heat shrink isn't required as with the data converter for the AIS VHF, but with result in spending more $$ for another piece of hardware.

So if properly connected with a data converter, your final comment says the system will support my autopilot's Track mode feature and receive directions from the Axiom, correct?

Does that mean it's capable of following a multi waypoint Route set of instructions from the Axiom, and auto change vessel heading from one waypoint to the next in the Route as the vessel achieves each waypoint destination?

Just want to be sure I have the right understanding of the terms Track and Route as it applies to autopilot navigation, to make an educated decision on this potential further system upgrade.

Appreciated, as always Chuck.

Scott,

Q1. So if properly connected with a data converter, your final comment says the system will support my autopilot's Track mode feature and receive directions from the Axiom, correct?
A1. Correct.

Q2. Does that mean it's capable of following a multi waypoint Route set of instructions from the Axiom, and auto change vessel heading from one waypoint to the next in the Route as the vessel achieves each waypoint destination?
A2. Yes.

Perfect Chuck, thank you. This may have to wait till next season to prevent spontaneous financial combustion for a newly retired guy living on a fixed budget after the Axiom upgrade. But now the path in a known thing.

I think this sub chapter in marine electronics education can be put to bed.

Thank you for your guidance.
