Q1. Regarding the AIS- if we put an AIS700 in, it has a built-in splitter so I think this would work out-of-the-box for us?
A1. AIS transceivers require two antennas, a passive GPS antenna (see my prior response) and a VHF antenna. The passive GPS antenna is used by the AIS650 / AIS700's internal GPS receiver to acquire a GPS position FIX and determine COG/SOG data in support RF AIS transmissions to other vessels, ground stations, etc. The VHF antenna (recommended gain is -3db or less) will in turn be responsible for broadcasting VHF transmissions as well as AIS transmissions.
