Hello Brewster16 and welcome to the Raymarine forum,
The cable you are indicating is sheared is a NMEA0183 cable and would only bring waypoint data to the Autopilot. It is not needed for the basic operation of the display. From what you are discribing the ST8002 is failed. We would recommend getting it tested or swapped.
