Within a network of more than one MFD, what is the function of the Data Master?

One and only one MFD within an Ethernet network must at all times of operation be configured as the system's Data Master MFD (HOME->MAINTENANCE->DATA MASTER). System settings (Data Source selections, boat details, units, page settings, etc.) and data (waypoints, routes, tracks) are stored within memory of the Data Master MFD. This information is shared with the non-Data Master MFDs via an Ethernet network. Of the system's MFDs, only the Data Master MFD will communicate with the SeaTalkng backbone. Accordingly, Data Source selection (HOME->SET-UP->SYSTEM SETTINGS->DATA SOURCES) may only be commanded from the Data Master MFD. As it is a common concept of operations in systems having two or more MFDs located at different stations (bridge, flybridge, navigation station, etc.) that only the MFD at that station will be switched ON, it will be necessary to interface each such MFD as a spur to the SeaTalkng backbone. To prevent possible loss of system data in such a system, it is recommended that all MFDs be switched ON prior to assigning a different MFD as the system's Data Master.
