RE: Type 2 Rotary Drive periodic non-response
Welcome to the Raymarine Forum Craig,

Q1. Is it possible the drive motor is overheating and cutting out?
A1. Yes.

Q2. I was going to send the drive in for servicing but was told it is too old (1992) to be accepted in the repair facility. A replacement is $1500 to $1700 so I'd like to attempt to repair it myself. Perhaps a simple fix like brushes or dirty commutator (it's gone 40,000 miles!).
Does this sound reasonable? Any advice on what to look for?
A2. Unfortunately, product repair procedures and the technical information required to repair Raymarine products is not supported. Should your skills be sufficiently adequate, you may want to attempt repairing the drive yourself. However, parts are no longer available from Raymarine for the drive and alternate sources for these parts are not available. Our recommendation would be to replace the drive with a new Type II Rotary Drive to ensure many more years of operation ... it would certainly be a less than pleasant experience to have a drive failure or possibly a course computer failure (resulting from excessive current draw) in the middle of a long passage.
