It sounds like you've given a lot of thought to the system. My motto in this sort of thing is 'if you have to ask the question then you shouldn't be doing it', but it sounds like you definitely didn't need to ask the question and can make your own informed judgements.
On the IP configuration, this is so as to ensure backwards-compatibility with legacy products, and also to prevent the support nightmare that I think would ensue if IP configuration were generally available. I agree though that it can cause problems in the sort of integration you're doing. Regards, Tom Raymarine since 1999.
